Brief & Proposal Form

2014/15

Northbrook College, Sussex

Peter Fischli and David Weiss At the Carpet Shop (1979)

Unit Title: Minor Project

Unit Code: 11
Year: 3
Credit Rating: 30
Pre-Requisites: Completion of Year 1 and 2
Type of Unit: Student led, duration: 12 weeks.
Start date: 22/09/14
Proposal deadline: 06/10/14
Interim Crit: 09/12/14
Deadline/Crit: 13/01/15

Unit Description:
This is a studentled project supported by regular one to one tutorials and work-in-progress
seminars or crits. Visiting speakers and Study trips also contribute to the content of this unit.
The evolution of the project is negotiated and supported by the tutorial process and group
crits but there are no specified parameters defining the work made. Apart from what is
normally available to the student in the form of basic materials and equipment responsibility
for resourcing and production values lies with the student. The student is required to manage
the development of other work (Dissertation and Major Project and Professional Practices
units) alongside the Minor project and give consideration to the timing of events. Any material
that is included in the Minor Project (music, video or film footage or any other source material
which is not of the students own original creation) must be copyright cleared.
The orientation of the project is likely to be informed by the students previous practice, with
reference to the development and extension of existing skills, techniques, interests,
knowledge and expertise. It may be that work undertaken for the Minor Project comes to
inform the Major Project, however the Minor Project outcomes must constitute a distinct,
assessable body of work separate from that undertaken in the Major Project.
At the start of the unit students will submit an initial proposal which will form the basis of ongoing developmental project supervision in the form of regular scheduled tutorials. The unit
culminates in a group crit of outcomes in January.
Late submissions will only be considered on the production of a valid Doctors Certificate.
Any late submissions, for whatever reason, will be referred to the Final Exam Boards.

Aims:
To enable the student to:
1. Develop a sophisticated and mature ability to independently research and investigate
relevant ideas, concepts, theories, practices, histories and techniques in relation to
the minor project
2. Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of histories, theories and
practices relevant to the creative project work pursued
3. Use technology and appropriate techniques in a sophisticated and controlled way to
achieve creative outcomes
4. Demonstrate an ability to manage and evaluate the creative process with
professionalism and relative autonomy
5. Present an informed, creative and engaging project work or works and have a clear
