Literacy Artifacts:
The Literacy Practices most produced in this community are medical. The ones most used
are exercise and nutrition. And the literacy practice most valued is hands on experience.

Literacy Practices:
Within domains there are literacy practices. Practices are cultural ways of utilizing
literacy(8). We utilize literacy to express our view with a domain, and when we practice this
literacy we gain more knowledge about it. Through practices we can interpret what the literacy is
telling us and figure out how to better utilize it. But just like cultures, practices are molded by
social rules.
Through society we have developed rules that have made the way we shape practices.
Practices are shaped by social rules which regulate the use and distribution of texts, prescribing
who may produce and have access to them(8). The reasoning behind this is because with out
education in these practices theirs essentially no use for these text to be available to everyone.
The only thing that would come from allowing everyone to access these texts would be false
interpretations because of the lack of education.

Analyzing the Artifacts:

1. The Topic being written about is Internship Opportunitys. Within this we learn the
different kinds of internships the CSME provides. Also showing you how important
internships are to the modern day student looking to diversify him or her self within this
majors discourse.
2. The topic is in a pamphlet making it easy to glance over. Only showing the key points
and how this will intern help you out in the long run.
3. Other than a pamphlet the topic could be written as an email to only the students involved
in this major, making it more exclusive. I could also be even more publicized, making
print outs and posting them to walls and bulletin boards.
4. Text can mediate events by telling the person where, when and what the event is about.
The text limits and determines the kind of events or things that can happen in these events
by showing pictures, and using specific discourse to help the person understand what is
appropriate.
5.

In the community the more visible and dominant literacy practices are social skills, being
able to work well with others is obviously a huge aspect from a list of internships that
help with people in K-12 to a picture of an intern helping a student.

6. The broader cultural practices would be to help enhance a persons hand on experience
within a domain. The social goals would be to get a person out of the classroom and into
there major, giving them more hands on experience, making them easier to work with
once being employed.

7. The text and practices have evolved as the major has, feed back from employers tells us
what we need to improve on ultimately changing what the text and practices will be
teaching.
8. Im not sure how informal learning has affected the literacy practices of the community.
1. The topic being written about is ACL protection and prevention program.
2. The topic is a web document found on the university of Utahs orthopaedic site.
3. The topic could have been printed out in a pamphlet, as flyer or been sent out in an email
to students in the sports science major.
4. The text mediates the event by giving you information on how to get involved in this
class. From the description of the program you can determine what king of things will be
happening in this event.
5. The more dominant and visible literacy practice in the community is learning about the
ACL separately form all the other ligaments in your knee.
6. The broader cultural practices and social goals of the community is to give students a
chance to gain more knowledge about a specific topic.
7. The text and practices have changed as the major changes. With more advancements in
ACL protection and prevention the text and practices have become more detailed and
somewhat easier.
8. Informal learning has made everyone think they are a genius in this community, people
think they know more than they do making it had to work with them.
1. The topic is being written about a running clinic.
2. The topic is an online document explaining a program ran by the University of Utahs
orthopaedic center.

3. The topic could have been printed out in a pamphlet, as flyer or been sent out in an email
to students in the sports science major.

about the importance of correct form.
6. The broader cultural practices and social goals in the community are more hands on
experience.
7. The text and practices have evolved as the major has, feed back from employers tells us
what we need to improve on ultimately changing what the text and practices will be
teaching.
8. Informal learning has made everyone think they are a genius in this community, people
think they know more than they do making it had to work with them.
1. The topic being written about is health and wellness
2. The topic is an event put on by the University of Utahs orthopaedic center.
3. The topic could have been printed out in a pamphlet, as flyer or been sent out in an email
to students in the sports science major.

provides a description of the event giving you enough information of what will be going
on.
5. The literacy practices that are more visible and dominant in the community is learning
how correct running can help relieve joint pain.

within their major.

7. The text and practices have evolved as the major has, feed back from employers tells us

teaching.
8. Informal learning has made people stubborn and hard to work with.

What is the claim?

This community uses the following literacy practices social interaction, classroom
learning, open seminars, and hands on experience. Literacy Practices are valued in the following
ways: Interactions within the major, understanding the material being used in the major, and
ability to advance in with the domain from the understanding the literacy practices. Sports
science students are affected by literacy practices in these ways.

Why should this claim matter to the reader?

The reader is most likely someone that is currently involved in the sports science major.
They know that these artifacts will help them with hands on experience in their majors, and more
knowledge from these literacy practices. I would hope their attitude towards the topic is grateful
because these are very easy ways to help you advance through your major with more experience.
They may need more help figuring out how this will help them. My claim matters because from
someone that looks for opportunities to make things easier I can see that these artifacts help will
help make this major more manageable to get through.
