Genre Analysis
Hemp

Theres a huge misunderstanding about the word Hemp. The majority of Americans
still believe or question if hemp is the same as marijuana. Hemp is in the cannabis family but
contains almost 0% of chemical tetrahydrocannibol, the same chemical that produces a high in
marijuana. This is the very reason why we are missing out on a highly beneficial product that can
be used for many things and can ultimately solve various problems that we face worldwide.
Small industries and other well-informed individuals have tried to educate the general public
about the reality of what hemp really is and how it can benefit us all if it were to be massproduced. Through genres, people are able to spread the message about the benefits of hemp.
Here are two examples: Christine Buckleys article Hemp Produces Viable Biodiesel, UConn
Study Finds, she talks about how hemp has been proven to be of great use as a biodiesel fuel.
Robert Herman, a blogger in the page Harmony Health Products, also attempts to convey this
message through an image of a hemp leaf with all the various different items it can be used to
produce. The purposes of these two genres will be discussed individually followed with a
compare and contrast analysis.

Audience and Purpose

The first genre, Hemp Produces Viable Biodiesel, UConnn Study Finds, is an article that was
written on 2010 by Christine Buckley, a student at the University of Connecticut, who was
involved in a research, led by Richard Parnas, a professor of chemical, materials, and
bimolecular engineering, to see if hemp could successfully be used as a biodiesel and in their
studies, they found out it was even better than other major biodiesel plants currently on the
market. The article findings was meant to target students at UConn. This is known because it is
on their University page for them to understand how hemp fuel is highly efficient even though it
is illegal to grow hemp here in the United States. This article mentions how the research group
hopes that their results someday will get the attention from places all over the world that also
want to produce hemp biodiesel so this genre was also meant to potentially someday attract other
companies that also see the opportunity of how hemp could benefit them. This implies that they
plan to use their data in order to be able to build a reactor system and get the attention of major
industries and companies to take a look at what theyve discovered. The purpose of this article,
according to the information provided in the text, was to prove that hemp can be used as a
biodiesel fuel and they want to commercialize the methods that they came up with to produce
biodiesel, catalysts and feedstock, which they believe could bring a lot of money into the market.
The second genre is an image that was posted on a blog on the Harmony Health Products
website by a blogger named Robert Herman on his blog, Is Hemp Cannabis? The title of the
image is The Many Uses of Cannabis which is written at the very top of the picture. This image
is meant to inform everyone in the general public who is unaware of how great of a plant this is
and how it can benefit us all in many ways. The image includes pictures of the many things

hemp can be converted into and its purpose is to change the audiences perspective on how they
view hemp. Society has a very negative view when they hear the word cannabis, even though
hemp does not contain the same amount of tetrahydrocannabinol as marijuana, and this image
tries to make people see how beneficial hemp really is. Unlike Christine Buckleys article, this
image talks about the various benefits hemp could bring to our country and does not just focus
on it being a great use of biodiesel in other countries.
Both genres try to inform their audiences about the benefits of growing hemp but they
both used different ways to present that message.
The context used in Christine Buckleys article is posted on a universitys website
therefore it uses formal language and correct grammar. Students at this university are allowed to
read and use this article as a reference and this is why it is written in an unbiased, informative
way. The page does a very good job conveying the researchers findings on hemp fuel by
providing the results of their overall research and uses only two images that relate to the subject
but the text is the most effective source provided. Since the audience is mainly students, the
language used for this article was appropriate and well presented.
Richard Parnas picture that he used in his article was effective in the way that it includes
pictures and text. Not only is the majority presented in visuals, but next to each picture there is
text that shows what each drawing is. This is effective among the audience, which is the general
public, because we all pay attention to visuals and if anyone could not understand what one of
the picture was, it is labeled for them with text so there wouldnt be any confusion. The image is
a hemp leaf surrounded by various pictures of items it can be converted into such as paper, food,
oil and medicine. This is a great way to generally inform people about all of hemps benefits in a

very quick way through this visual. Essentially, these two genres both convey the message of
what hemp can be used for, one through text and the other through visuals.
Logos
The first genre conveyed its message effectively by showing how the research was
conducted and showing the results they got which proved how hemp can be a viable use of
biodiesel. It also showed facts about the industrialization of hemp and some statistics for
example how 97% of hemp oil can be converted into fuel. Through its professional use of
terminology, this article effectively informs the reader about the plants potential. The second
genre presents its message through pictures and was done consciously enough to be able to
present a sort of logical appeal. The image is pretty straight forward especially how it includes
the text The many uses of Cannabis and then provides pictures of the items hemp can produce
which is pretty self-explanatory.
Ethos
The article by Christine Berkley mentions the names of students from the Department of
Chemistry and the Department of Plant Sciences which makes the article more credible since it
talks about the people who were involved in the research for producing fuel out of hemp oil. The
author quotes many of these students especially the professor who was the one who led the
study. The author of this article also establishes credibility by mentioning that she is a part of the
College of Liberal arts and Sciences which is relevant to the subject. The article however, does
not provide any sources for further research which might somewhat damage its credibility but
since she is part of this research, it may have not been needed. The second genre does not have
any artist signature that tells the viewer who created it so this may cause a bit of skepticism from

the audience. The information, however, can quickly be proved correct by just doing a quick
google search. Other than that, the people who stumble upon this image must trust the visuals
and if there are any doubts, the viewer can do his/her own further research if they are interested
in learning more about what this plant can offer.
Pathos
The first genre only includes pure facts and information that was gathered throughout the
research and does not really try to persuade anyone to feel any sort of way. It may, however,
cause the audience to feel a sense of hope for the environment since the article talks about how
hemp can replace our current fuels in a much more efficient and safer way without causing any
smog or acid rain. This information gives the audience a positive outlook on our future
environment and economy and might even encourage some to take action to make hemp a
popular use of fuel. The creator of the second genre also does not make an attempt to provoke
any emotion to the audience since it only provides quick information about the many uses of
hemp. Like the article, this image might also cause the audience to feel positive about the future
as they take a look at all the benefits this plant would give our country if it were fully legalized.
Although this wasnt the genres purpose, this is a possible emotional reaction that the audience
might receive.
Structure and Delivery
The information on the first genre is well composed and shaped by the way the website is
organized. The information is introduced by the title of the article which is written in large bold
letters and it is then followed by the articles text and a few pictures of the author and a picture of
hemp fields. The article is kind of aligned to the left since there is a column on the right that

provides links to other pages. Overall the information is organized neatly to the side, it is
separated by paragraphs and the images are labeled right under, explaining what they are. This
website isnt really eye-catching since it has a very simple look. The layout of the website is dark
blue at the top with the websites title written in white text. There is no color on the article other
than the images two images of the authors face and the hemp plants. Since there are no
decorations surrounding the article, this is a good way to keep the audience focused solely on
what the text information is trying to send out to the audience.
The second genre projects its information by providing many pictures of the uses of the hemp
plant surrounded by the hemp leaf itself. Even though there are 12 different images surrounding
the leaf, the image does not seem crowded or highly overwhelming for the audience. On the
contrast, all the images help the audience quickly get informed on what hemp can be used for in
just a matter of minutes or even seconds. The image is well organized by providing a title at the
top that says The many uses of cannabis and placing the cannabis leaf right in the middle. The
background is green, just like the leaf but the leaf is darker so it does not blend in with the back
ground. Surrounding the leaf there are pictures of paper products, textiles, molded plastics, body
care products, construction, livestock feed and bedding, nutritional supplements, essential oils
medicines, and food. All of these items are labeled with what they are at the bottom of each one.
The size of those images are good enough to see and understand what they are but they still have
a label which makes it even easier for the audience to see what they are.

Conclusion
Overall, the image seems to be the one that is the most effective in conveying the
information of what hemp is. The article mainly focused only on one product that the hemp plant

can be turned into therefore it did not provide as much information on everything industrial
hemp can do. The image provided the general view on the various products that hemp can create
in a short and simple way and therefore it is more effective in informing the audience.
