Parents and guardians play a significant role in supporting a girls path toward the Gold Award.
However, it should be the girls decision whether to complete the process, as it MUST be the
girls project. It is something she has to want to do herself, not to please you.
Parents and guardians can assist a girl by:

Reading through the materials so that you feel comfortable in offering support.
Remembering that her Gold Award project must be based on her passion, not yours!
Encouraging and supporting her, but not pressuring her.
Recognizing that she is capable, competent, and worthy of respect as she assumes greater
citizenship, responsibility, and leadership. Her way may not be your way.
aiding her in developing a network of adults.
ensure she is not over-stressed, and is supported by the family in her endeavors.
helping and supporting with safety and money guidelines. These help ensure the safety of
your daughter and others, as well as the integrity of the Girl Scout program.
allowing her to stumble and learn the lessons that come with a Gold Award project. She
will be working with a project advisor, and adult who has skills specific to her project,
and a Gold Award Committee member who has been trained to assist her.
joining in the celebration as she is honored for her accomplishments.

If a scout has any physical, emotional, or mental condition (including dyslexia, ADHD, etc.) that
would alter normal participation or evaluation of a Gold Award project in any way, the parent or
guardian must notify council PRIOR to the initial interview and let us know what we can do to
accommodate. Evaluations will be based on ability.

Why have you chosen this person to be your Gold Award Project Advisor?
I chose Lisa Palmer, a former Girl Scout, as my advisor because she is familiar with nonprofit organizations such as Junior League and through her past employment and ongoing
volunteer work with several organizations in the Inland Empire. She has been working in her
community for over 25 years as a volunteer for YWCA, Keep Riverside Beautiful, and as an
employer for United Way, and as an educator. As an educator she has helped implement projects
and make sure they are carried out. She is also interested in women's fashion and will be able to
advise me while purchasing the items for the women at the shelter. She is organized and an
effective worker who has agreed to contribute to my project in the ways necessary.
How will this person help you to have a successful project?
Lisa Palmer will help oversee my work and provide suggestions in order to make my project
successful. Her problem solving, time management and efficiency skills will come in handy with
a project as large as a Gold Award. Lisa has worked with many charities and non-profit
organizations in the past and continues to do so which will be helpful when I am working with
one to achieve my goal. She has attended community forums and worked with shelters in
Riverside. While in Riverside she has worked with Junior League in running classes for pregnant
teen women help prepare for their futures for over 10 years. Lastly, she will provide a different
perspective or thought on my work to make sure that my project runs smoothly, is effective, is
sustainable, and measurable.

I agree to be the Gold Award Project advisor for the above-named Girl Scout.

Briefly describe your Journey Take Action Project:
My first Journey Take Action Project, aMAZE, when I was a Junior in Troop 1481 focusing
on the importance of true friendships. My troop and I spent time discussing what we value in
friendships, how to resolve conflicts, and how we can be better friends. We discussed, wrote, and
drew pictures about the issues people or friends face in their lives and how to overcome them.
Topics ranged from first impressions to trust and time management. This Journey Take Action
Project encouraged us to use our voices and stand up for each other and for our friends rather
than fighting or hurting the feelings of our friends. We also worked to receive the Interact Award
by completing the necessary Interact Challenges. This project taught us the lifelong skills of
cooperation and friendship so important in our lives.

Briefly describe your 2nd Journey or Silver Award Take Action Project:
The Second Journey I completed as a Senior was titled Sow What? and dealt with the question
"Where does your food come from?". We explored the worldwide food networks and mapped
out where our meals come from. In the process of learning about the food networks, my troop
and I learned about the energy consumption of food and the different famers from around the
world and even our local markets. Once we realized what really makes a meal "happy" and just
how many people in our very own community are not able to get food they need we began our
Harvest Award Project. With our project planned, we received donations from parishioners at
Saint Philip the Apostle Church and local grocery stores such as Fresh and Easy. Our focus was
primarily to provide children specifically and their families with breakfast. Next, the food was
delivered and stocked on the shelves of the Friends in Deed in Pasadena by our troop where the
food was to be distributed that very week to families in need.

Project Title: Dress for Success
Proposed Start Date: November 1, 2014 Proposed Completion Date: June 15, 2015
Please answer the following questions in complete sentences.
A. Briefly describe your project. Include the issue (community need) your project will address
and your target audience. (Remember your 15-second pitch.)
After volunteering at a local women's shelter in Pasadena, I noticed how bare, worn and
outdated the clothing available was for the women. The shelter works with the women of low
income or homeless families help them prepare resumes and job applications and plan their
careers, so they can get their families back on their feet, but I noticed the process seemed to
neglect their presentation. These women must make a good, professional first impression on
their potential employers and by providing them with the proper business attire or interview
clothing so they will be able to look professional, be confident and ready for their desired jobs.
Not only do I hope to help these women at the Elizabeth House create a more professional outfit
for their career whatever it may be, but I hope to provide them with accessories such as shoes,
jewelry, and a purse. It is my goal to help these women look their best and to come prepared for
work and feel confident down to their necessary undergarments which I will be providing
through donations. Their new outfits will be personal to them and help them feel orderly and
ready to tackle their obstacles head on.
B. Who, specifically, will benefit from your project? In what way will they benefit?
7

The pregnant women in the Pasadena area will benefit immensely if they get their desired
job position. The first impression while applying for jobs of the women will be on their
appearance and how they are put together. This includes their whole new wardrobe from
undergarments to shoes that come together to produce the desired look. If these women do get
the position then they will be able to benefit their family or themselves with their new
paychecks. From there they may be able to pay their rent or mortgage and various bills and put
food on the table for their families. With a new wardrobe these women will feel more confident,
clean, and professional.

C. Discuss your reasons for selecting this particular project.

I chose this specific project because I saw the barren and outdated clothing rack at the
shelter and thought that I could do something about it for the women at the shelter in my
community. I reflected back on myself and realized how much I enjoy feeling proud and my best
in a nice, appropriate outfit, and I want to make these women feel more comfortable and help
them back onto their feet. I reflected on how much I take my clothing for granted and the idea of
even having fresh socks and came to the realization that I could make a difference in the lives of
others. Clothing is a necessity which on job interviews gives the employer a good first
impression of their potential employee.

D. Outline the strengths, talents, and skills will be put into action on this project. What skills or
qualities do you hope to develop?
After completing my Bronze Award and Silver Award I realized that that when I start a
project I will do my very best to complete. This dedication and commitment that I have found
within myself is what I plan to put into action while working on my Gold Award. I am also
organized and have my steps lined up to successfully reach my goals. I will also be able to put
my money management and collaboration skills to work while working on buying clothing for
the women and working with the women of the shelter and clothing companies. Over the course
of this project I hope to develop my leadership skills and be an effective communicator. By
effectively and efficiently communicating my ideas and putting them into action my project will
be a success. With every success their comes setbacks, whatever they may be, and I hope to
develop my problem solving skills in finding the best possible solution to benefit others as a
result. While helping others, I will be around women with different backgrounds culturally,
economically, and religiously which will help me become a more diverse and accepting person
who appreciate the blessings in my life.

E. Describe the steps that are required to put your plan into action, including resources, facilities,
equipment, and approvals needed. (Attach a detailed project plan.)
Before sending in my proposal, my first step was to contact the Elizabeth House. The
director of the House and I brainstormed ideas and came up with a plan for my Gold Award.
Once my project is approved, my project can officially begin with me contacting various
companies for their products to give to the women. Some of these companies such as Target,
8

Nordstrom, and Macy's require a few months notice for the required donation in order for it to be
arranged in the budget. I will be speaking to and emailing their correspondents for these
donations and have items shipped to my house where they can be organized. In time as these
donations whether in kind, gift cards or grants are being processed I will put together a brochure
for the women at the shelter with helpful tips on dressing for success in interviews and on the
job. I hope to organize clothing drives at my parish, St. Philip the Apostle, as well as a purse
drive. I have never seen a clothing drive specifically for purses making it my goal to be unique
and to strive for as many donations as I can receive from the people of my community. These
donations will be taken back to the Elizabeth House and distributed to the women and stored at
the house either in the garage or closet. Those donations in gift cards will be spent at the store
locations once the requested sizing has been requested by the women. Once the women have
been given their new outfits it is my goal to have a local hairdresser, makeup artist or stylist
come and speak to the women and help them put their new outfits and the whole look together.
The women will receive some of their own beauty products to apply what they have learned from
the makeup, hair, or nail artists. This hopefully will be a fun event for the women at the shelter
where they can walk away feeling good about themselves and enter their careers feeling
confident.
F. Enter the names of people or organizations you plan to inform and involve.

G. What methods or tools will you use to evaluate the impact of your project?
To evaluate the impact and scope of people my project has impacted I plan to make a
brochure and video filled with feedback from the organization and women who benefited from
my project. If the women are willing to be interviewed their answers may be included as well as
the numbers and outline of the project and just what has been accomplished. This video could be
posted on YouTube to help show what Girl Scouts or anyone can do to make a difference in
someone else's life and to encourage service in the community. To calculate the impact I plan to
9

speak directly to the shelter and learn as the project develops what is successful and what is not
to ensure that my project is accomplishing its said goals.
The website of Elizabeth House clearly states their mission:
to provide shelter, hope and support to homeless pregnant women and their children,
addressing the physical, emotional, spiritual, and economic needs in a nurturing atmosphere.
Keeping their mission in mind, Elizabeth Houses goal is to provide a comprehensive program of
case management, counseling, educational classes, prenatal care, and resources throughout the
pregnancy and beyond.
I feel that if I can provide resources and care throughout the homeless pregnant womens
stay at Elizabeth House to address the physical, emotional and economic needs, I have succeeded
with a sustainable project to empower these women with their own success.
H. How will your project be sustained beyond your involvement?
My project will be sustained beyond my involvement by having the surplus clothing
available at the shelter for the women need be and for the women to come. This closet will be
available to the shelter at all times as new residents arrive. I will also be working with the
clothing companies to develop a plan where the Elizabeth House receives their donations once a
year or possibly multiple times per year. This constant flow of clothing will help maintain the
women's wardrobe year after year. Blank templates of my letters sent to the companies will be
left at the House for future use. My brochures with tips on business attire will be left behind for
future reference as well as other sources for information.
I. Describe how you plan to tell others about your project, the projects impact, and what you
have learned (Web site, blog, presentations, posters, videos, articles).
I plan to publicize my project with the help of a website. This will include my plan,
timeline and the various information regarding the project. I will be sure to include the video
that will be put together about the project on this website. My findings and impact will be clearly
displayed in this format. Before I have the clothing and purse drive I will make flyers to
advertise and promote my project. My brochure will also be shown in PDF format with articles
on my work written by myself to spread the word and message of helping those in one's
community.

Impact Planning
(Submit with your application)
Using the Impact Planning Chart, describe the impact you hope your project will have on your
community, your target audience, and you.
Impact On . . .

Goals

Potential Impact

Community
Specifically the women and
their families in my
community at the Family
Hope shelter will benefit or
be impacted by this project.

What community issues do you plan

to address?
I plan to address the need for
business attire for women at the
shelter. This specific type of clothing
is overlooked at shelters and by
donors. Yet the shelters help the
women put together their resumes
and plan for their careers they do not
provide them with the proper attire
they may need to present themselves
as prepared and professional women.
This includes shoes, purses,
undergarments, and accessories. I
hope to prepare these women for
their interview so that they may get
the job position to benefit themselves
and their families.

What examples of
the project impact
might you see in future?
In the future I hope to
come back and visit with
the women from the
shelter and hear that they
did in fact get the job
position and are now able
to support their family.
Hopefully they will be
ready to move out of the
shelter and into their own
homes or apartments and
raise their children in a
safe and cared for
environment. I might see
that their lives are finally
back on track and that
they are followed by
success not only for
themselves but for their
family.

12

Target Audience
(workshop participants,
other youth, community
members, and so on)
The women at the shelter
who benefit from the
clothing. If they do have
families then they will
benefit as well by

What skills, knowledge, or attitudes

will your target audience gain?
My target audience will gain
confidence when walking into their
interviews with their new outfits.
They will be able to set the tone of
the interview and focus on the actual
interview in a professional manner
rather than worrying about their
appearance. With this confidence and
poise they may be able to get a job
which can be used to support their
families. They can now represent
themselves in a positive way with
their best foot forward during the
interview and after.

How will you know your

target audience gained
skills or knowledge?
I will know that they have
gained this confidence by
the way they carry
themselves and how they
react. Their feedback and
possible job opportunities
will also be a good
indicator of the
importance of looking put
together and professional
during an interview and/
or work.
