TESOL 501
Lesson Plans

Context
This lesson plan was designed for an intermediate level, reading and writing class for
adults at the Mid-Willamette Valley Literacy Center. The MWVLC is a non-profit, faith-based
organization dedicated to helping people enhance their lives through literacy and learning
English. The syllabus for this class uses The Giver as a guide for instruction employing a
content-content based curriculum.
Technology
In a growing digital world, students should not be left in the dark. They need to
understand how to use technology to communicate, find answers to questions, and perform
tasks such as log on to their physicians website. This class seeks to arm students with digital
knowledge to accomplish such tasks by requiring them to make daily posts to a classroom
Facebook page where they will discuss the reading as well as integrate various technologies
such as Google slides.
Learning Outcomes
1. SWBAT define the word utopia.
2. SWBAT apply knowledge from Facebook posts and assigned reading to express
opinions or debate theories during the class discussion.
3. SWBAT compare and contrast Jonas utopian society with our society by creating
a Venn diagram.
4. SWBAT examine characters within the text and identify their physical attributes
as well as their personality type and display their findings on a Google slide.

Reading discussion
topic: Utopia

T defines the word Utopia. Ss participate in a guided

discussion on a perfect world (correlating with chapters 1-3
in The Giver). T will use Facebook (FB) posts from the previous
week to guide the discussion.
Sample talking points:
1. Many schools in the US require their students to wear
uniforms. How is this similar to the citizens in Jonas
village? What message does this send and what does it
reveal about society?
2. What consequences come from sameness and what
are the drawbacks of living in a Utopian society?
3. Can you identify similarities between our society and
Jonas?

18 min

Venn diagram
activity

Divide Ss into pairs to create a Venn diagram comparing the

utopian society in The Giver with our society. Ss will use a
medium sized poster board. When groups have finished, T
will draw the diagram on the Smartboard and Ss will fill it in
using the stylus.

Character mapping

min

Materials required:

Ss will form groups of two. Assign each group a character

from The Giver. Using Google Slides, each group will create a
slide depicting how the character might physically look and
what their attributes are. All slides will be put together by the
T to create a character mapping slideshow to be presented to
the class. Students may be given more time during the next
class to continue the project.
