Background

1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor

at the Young Mens Christian Association
(YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to
blend elements of basketball, baseball,
tennis, and handball to create a game
for his classes of businessmen which
would demand less physical contact than
basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette).
Morgan borrowed the net from tennis,
and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the
floor, just above the average mans head.
During a demonstration game, someone
remarked to Morgan that the players
seemed to be volleying the ball back and
forth over the net, and perhaps volleyball would be a more descriptive name
for the sport.

Starting up
My aunt and someone I consider my
big sister both played during their
middle school and high school years.
They are both major inspirations in
my life so I decided to play the same
sports they did. They both would take
me out in the yard and the would
toss the volleyball to me to help me
work on fundamentals.

Female Heisman Award

About Me
The Heisman

There are high school scholarships for

the male and female heisman. These
athletes not only have to exceed at
their sport but they have to exceed
in the community and the classroom.
I was blessed to have received this
award my senior year. Because of it
I was able to go to the Virginia Tech
football spring game and watch it
in the box seats while also getting to
meet Frank Beamer. We were given
posters of our accomplishments and
he signed them. My name was on
the digital screen in the stadium. That
day I also got my picture taken with
the real Heisman Trophy.

The first year that I started playing

volleyball was when I was in the
7th grade. There were tryouts for
the 8h grade team at the local
intermediate school. I made it and
even though I was just a 7th grader
I started. The coach saw great
promise in my ability and how quickly
I picked up on the fundamentals of
the sport so she wanted me to try
out for JV my 8th grade year. I made
that team and also started. After
that year my skills improved greatly
so the coach told me to try out for
varsity. I made it and did not start
in the first set of each match but in
the second. After that year I started
every game and continued to play
unitl I graduated.
