Supersedes October 1966 edition

Liitlose Rohrverschraubungen mit Schneidring; Einschraubstutzen mit

kegeligem Einschraubgewinde

In keeping with current practice in standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO),
a comma has been used throughout as the decimal marker.

1 Field of application
This standard applies to compression couplings with tapered stud end (hereinafter briefly referred to as couplings) and
bore type W in accordance with DIN 3861, which are used for solderless pipe joint assemblies.
It is recommended not to adopt couplings with tapered stud end for new designs.
Depending on the medium, the working pressure, the temperature and the matching of the materials used, no guarantee
of leak tightness can be given unconditionally. Consequently, it is recommended to use a sealant, depending on the
application concerned.
Couplings conforming to DIN 3901, series LL, may be used as a substitute.

Details not specified shall be selected appropriately.

3 Material
Standard type in steel in accordance with DIN 3859. Other materials specified in DIN 3859 shall be agreed, quoting the
material symbol given in DIN 3859 and appending the symbol to the standard designation.
Note. Should there be no mention of the material in the designation of the standardized component in documents which
are already in existence, then steel (St) as in DIN 3859 shall be deemed applicable, with due regard to previous
editions of the standard.

4 Finish
Standard finish: Znph r5f in accordance with DIN 50942.
Other types of finish as specified in DIN 3859 shall be given in the standard designation by appending the appropriate
symbol.

Amendments
The following amendments have been made as compared with the October 1966 edition:
The standard has been completely revised, see Explanatory notes.

Explanatory notes
relating to DIN 3900 to DIN 3914 and to DIN 3951 to DIN 3955
In connection with the revision of Standards DIN 3900 to DIN 3914 and DIN 3951 to DIN 3955,.awhole series of
developments had to be taken into consideration; these developments arose from the introduction of. DIN ISO 228 Part 1,
which now acts as the governing screw thread standard for new standards, and also from the publication of DiN 3859
(technical delivery conditions). As a consequence, the screw thread symbols for parallel (Whitworth) external screw
threads, which in the previous editions had been based on DIN 259 (R screw threads) have now been changed over to the
screw thread symbols in accordance with DIN ISO 228 Part-1 (G screw threads) in the new editions. In this connection it
should be noted that nothing has changed in respect of the geometry of the couplings as a consequence, and also that the
old couplings are fully interchangeable with the new couplings. A special reference to this aspect has been included in the
respective standards.
The specifications on material and finish have been harmonized with the specifications of DIN 3859. DIN 3859 has been
specified as the technical delivery condition for couplings in accordance with the standards of this series.

DIN 3900 Page 3

In the case of elbow couplings and tee couplings, two types have been specified in order to take recent technological
developments into consideration, viz. a forged type and a type fabricated from sections.
In the standards dealing with stud assemblies with preassembled olive and coupling nut, viz. DIN 3952, DIN 3953 and
DIN 3954, the /1 dimensions and the permissible deviations relating thereto have been amended. These dimensions have
also been incorporated in DIN 3955 for male stud coupling assemblies.
The examples of designation also had to be amended in accordance with the amendments made to the screw thread
symbols. A reference has therefore been included in the standards affected by this amendment to the effect that an L22R
coupling ordered in accordance with old parts lists will now be delivered in identical design and finish under the designation L22G.
