Design Principles and Elements

Line
A Straight path that adds precision to the design.

Texture
The feeling or look of a surface, sometimes looking
rough or smooth.

Colors
A visual response of the eye due to light waves.
Warm colors, red ,orange, yellow, brown.
Cool colors, blue, green, purple, white, grey.

Depth
The feeling of distance in the field of view in a design.

blurring can give a sense of


depth.

Light
A natural source that affects how we look at things, It
affects colors and shades.
Light is shown reflecting light
all around its surroundings

Direction
The movement (Physically or Metaphorically) of the
design or character or object in a design.

blur gives the object a


sense of motion.

Mass
The size or weight of a shape or object usually
expressed through shade, color, or hue.

Tone
A characteristic to give to a design to make it look darker.
This is used to give depth, mass, light, color, and overall
to give the design more character and detail.

Value
The Lightness or darkness of a color.

Shape (2D)
A composed object or design with only height and
width.

Shape (3D)
A composed object or design with height, width, and
length.

Space (Positive and Negative)


To give a design a sense of what setting it is in, a dark
setting, or a light setting. Sometimes these can create
illusions.

Balance
A visual stability of color or shade
the ying yang symbols has a balance
of black and white

Emphasis
A focus on a particular thing in the design.

except for the eye, adding emphasis
to the eye.

Proportion
Adding a sense of scale to an object or character.

Repetition
A repeating of rhythm, color or object.
this piece of art work has repetition because
it is repeating the same object over and
over with different colors.

unity
All elements working together to create a whole.
various different types of techniques

Contrast
A difference in color or shade.

Harmony
Similar to unity, Harmony is using a particular set of
techniques without using anything different to make up
a composition.

or objects.

Variety
Many different features such as art styles, tone, shading, color
and shapes.
