RATIONALE: The ideologies and collectivism and individualism are the basis of
personal, collective, and national identity. In order to have a better understanding,
this task allows you in inquire into each principle as well as practice source analysis,
and interpretation skills that are essential to achieve success in this course.

TASK: Within the exploration of individualism and

collectivism, we have discussed the principles that
foundation of each ideology. Using what we have
discussed about each principle, your task will be to find
sources that encompass each principle of BOTH
individualism and collectivism, and give a brief
explanation in your own words that define each
characteristic. However, this is only one part of the
assignment. Once you have collected the sources, you
will exchange you work with a partner and interpret and
analyze three sources, and how they related to the
principles.

Individualism
Private Property: Every individual has his or her own right to own private
property, such as a house, land, business etc. and have those rights to the property
protected by the government.

Rule of Law: There is no one above the law. This will ensure that every individual
has equality before the law no matter status in society, ethnicity, culture and or
religion. To ensure rule of the law there has to be a separation of who makes the
law and who then enforces the law.
The clearest way to show what the rule of law means to us in everyday life is to recall what has happened
when there is no rule of law.

Individual Rights and Freedoms: Rights and freedoms that are guaranteed to
citizens within a country that a government ( for the most part) cannot take away
for any reason as they are seen as fundamental and rights that every citizen is born
with

Competition: Competition is essential in an individualist ideology or society as it

encourages economic growth and would in theory make people work hard. It also
creates an efficient society because the greater the competition the better quality
of goods and services are produced for a just price. (In theory)
Every man, as long as he does not violate the laws of justice, is left perfectly free to pursue his own
interest his own way, and to bring both his industry and capital into competition with those of any
other man or order of men.

Economic Freedom: It is the freedom to choose how to produce, sell and use your
own resources, while respecting others rights to do the same.

Self Interest: The idea that an individual will do what is in his or her best interest
to get ahead in life. It is this self interest that also guides the economy (invisible
hand) and dictates which products and services are wanted and which ones will fail.
