HEALTHY TIPS
FOR BETTER TRIPS
Uber spoke with Alexandra Sowa, MD, a doctor in New York City, to get her insights
on potential health issues for Uber partners and ways to keep yourself safe and healthy

SLEEP
It can be tempting
to drive a few extra
hours for more fares,
even if that means
giving up some sleep.
But dontits unsafe
for you and for others
on the road. Sleep
deprivation can impair
judgment and reaction
time. Sowa says, In
order for adults to
have optimal energy
every day, you need
seven to nine hours
of sleep. For drivers
especially, this is not a
luxury, its a necessity. And a coffee
break cant replace
any of those hours
of sleep, Sowa adds.
Caffeine and other
stimulants dont overcome severe sleep
deprivationit just
doesnt work.

MOMENT UM

CARDIOVASCULAR
HEALTH

BACK/SHOULDER
HEALTH

Driving is sedentary,
meaning a seated, inactive job. A completely
sedentary lifestyle can
put you at increased
risk for heart disease
and weight gain. But
you dont have to take
hours out of your day
to exercise to avoid
this. According to
Sowa, as little as 10
minutes [of aerobic
exercise] a day can
help fight off weight
gain and problems
with your heart.
Aerobic exercise is
anything from climbing stairs or jogging
to kickboxing or
swimming.

We know it can be
hard to catch a break
between trips, but
keep in mind that
sitting in the same position without a break
isnt good for you
and can cause back,
shoulder, or neck pain.
The good news? Its
easy to prevent these
problems. Sowa recommends stretching
frequently, even just
getting out of the car
and walking around
briefly, and that drivers avoid sitting on
wallets or other hard
objects. Sowa also
suggests shopping for
back support pillows
and cushions, particularly if your car seat
doesnt provide great
lower back support.

HYDRATION

LIFTING

Drinking water
throughout the day
is always important.
Experts recommend
six to eight glasses
per day. Even if youre
trying to maximize
driving time, dont
skimp on drinking water because you dont
want to take time
to find a bathroom.
Among other risks,
Sowa observes, you
can be prone to kidney stones if youre
dehydrated.

Carrying luggage or
packages for riders is
always a nice gesture
if you are physically
able. Sowa simply
cautions, Dont bend
at the waist, always
lift by bending at the
knees. This can protect your back from
taking the full weight
of what youre lifting.

No matter how good you may feel, annual checkups

are an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Make sure to see a doctor regularly. See Page 6 for information about getting health insurance through Ubers
partnership program with Stride Health.

Without a doubt, Uber owes Austins success so far to the driver partners
and Austinites who signed petitions, attended City Council meetings, and
made sure their voices were heard. Thanks to all of them, Silicon Hills now
joins Silicon Valley (the San Francisco Bay Area), Silicon Alley (New York

in tech but in transportation as well.
Uber worked around the clock to pass regulations so that Austinites could

PRO TIPS FROM

A PRO PARTNER

MOMENTUM: What were you doing before you started partnering with Uber, and what initially led you to Uber?

immigrant I was looking for a job on Craigslist right around the
time when Uber started. I actually ended up starting to drive

S: Partnering with Uber, Ive learned how important it is to pay
safe, productive, and healthy. When I came here, it was a big
attention to the behavior of the clients, like when they like to go

certain places or where they love to hang out. If you really focus
to get back to school in order to get my degrees from home to

Sofiane was one of Ubers first driver partners in San Francisco, our first city.
MOMENTUM magazine caught up with him to hear about his platform experiences and
why driving with Uber never gets oldnot even after 20,000 trips.

M: During your time partnering with Uber,

know anything about

the city, but I ended
up learning everything
about San Francisco
from partnering
with Uber.

S: In July 2011, I started my own fleet.

At first, I started with one car, and then
because business was going well, I decided to add another car, another car, and
another car. At my peak, I had five cars
and five drivers. Eventually, I decided to
reduce the fleet and just keep a car for
myself. I have found out that doing that on my own with one
car and having a very constant schedule are worth more to me.
M: What did you learn from managing people in your fleet?

S: Managing people was great. My drivers had no experience

with driving or customer service, so I helped them learn how to
be productive and give the clients a good experience. Because
its a software-based concept, I also taught the drivers how to
get around and how to maneuver the Uber app. I even gave my
drivers really basic PowerPoint presentations, which were mostly based on how to be strategic to get the most out of their shifts.

M: What do you like about partnering with Uber?

MOMENT UM

be happy about the servicethe way they want it, when they
want it. In general, I enjoy seeing this business get to the level
that its at now. There has been a lot of hard work put into it
there is no doubt about that.

S: I really enjoy the convenience of partnering with Uber, and

the fact that you can choose your own schedule. Beyond that, I
enjoy giving the perfect rides to people, and I like seeing them

M: What tips do you have for drivers who

are just starting to partner with Uber?

S: Learn how to navigate the citythats

key for a new partner who is just starting
out. When I started driving in San Francisco, I didnt know anything about the
city, but I ended up learning everything
about San Francisco from partnering with
Uber. The key is to put as many hours in
as possible on the road. Do some research on a map, learn the
names of the streets, and then go practice. Get in your car and
go drive. Once you learn the street names, everything gets easier, and you learn the fastest ways to get from one neighborhood
to another. Now, as soon as I have a client and he tells me an
address or a number, I ask for cross streets and I automatically
know where to go and what the fastest way is to get there.
M: What are some of your strategies for providing an exceptional experience for those who ride with you?
S: On my end, as a driver, its about the simple things: providing
good customer service, being on time, making sure I follow the
right route and dont get lost, and making good conversation
with the client. Also, with the map and pin drop function, its
easy to locate one another and be on time, which is really important. If its an exceptional experience for the client, it ends up
being an exceptional experience for the driver.

WHAT ARE THE BEST NEW

MODELS FOR 2015?
AN EXPERT RECOMMENDS TOYOTA PRIUS AND
CAMRY FOR UBERX PARTNERS

When youre on the road and you gotta go, you gotta go. Here is some tried-and-true
advice on the best places to find free and clean bathrooms, recommended by your fellow
Uber driver partners.

When it comes to the best vehicles for logging long

hours behind the wheel, who better to talk to than a person who knows cars inside and out? We caught up with
Don Davis, director of Toyota Walnut Creeks AutoCredit
Custom Finance Department, to hear which 2015 models provide the safety, affordability, dependability, and
comfort you need. Uber is always on the lookout for new
ways to enhance the partner experience and help partners finance new vehicles at better rates.
According to Davis, the Toyota Prius has been a

long-standing favorite of both drivers and riders. It is

a staple of the auto industry for dependability and fuel
efficiency, averaging an estimated 51 miles per gallon.
All three Prius models have back-up cameras and Bluetooth hands-free navigation, which facilitates safety for
drivers and passengers. The Prius 2015 has 17-inch alloy wheels, premium stitching, and dark chrome accents
to enhance its interior design, as well as a spacious interior, turn signal mirrors, and an illuminated footwell
area. Additional features include a Solar Roof, which
helps keep cabin air temperature close to that of the
outside air, and remote air conditioning you can activate
even before you get in the car. The Prius also employs a
Pre-Collision System, which applies brakes and retracts
the front seatbelts if it detects a frontal collision, and a

The Toyota Camry has also proven to be a successful
vehicle for uberX partners. Davis notes that the Camry
Hybrid is particularly popular among passengers, thanks
to its comfortable interior and smooth, quiet ride. The

to help you get the most out of your drive. The 2015
model also has a wireless charging system for your mobile devices, as well as a Blind Spot Monitor, which will
help you know when its safe to change lanes or back out
of a driveway. The Camry has optimum fuel economy
mpg, and the V6 offering 31 highway mpg.
The bottom line: All of these models are recommended for their affordability, fuel efficiency, safety, and diversity in style. If youre a partner looking for the perfect

In Boston, MA, partner Richard says, Dunkin Donuts is a
savior. He recommends the locations at Brighton Avenue,

GAS STATIONS/CONVENIENCE STORES

In Austin, TX, partner Debbie recommends the Wag-a-Bag on
24th Street in West Campus: Theyre very nice about letting
me use the bathroom, and its very clean.
In Washington, DC, partner Thomas recommends the Sunoco

In San Diego, CA, Ernesto recommends the gas station in the
East Village at 16th Street and G Street.
PORT-A-POTTIES
In San Francisco, CA, Denny says that as you get farther
from the Financial District, youre more likely to find a Porta-Potty thats unlocked and open for use.
SUPERMARKETS
Costco, Safeway, and other large supermarket chains double
as great pit stops in any city!

If all else fails, try your smartphone: Apps like Sit or Squat, Where to Wee, Toilet Finder, and Bathroom Scout are almost like an
Uber for bathrooms, providing crowd-sourced information to help direct you to the nearest available, clean, public restroom.
