Read the following text about how British people spend their holidays.

Holidays with the British

10

British people usually have about four weeks holiday every year
plus public holidays (also called Bank holidays) . They have their
holidays in summer, in July or August. Many working people take a
two-week holiday during the summer. A second holiday break in winter
or in spring is also becoming more popular in the UK. In winter some
people go skiing in Europe, and in spring, visits to capital cities such as
Paris, Amsterda m or Barcelona are popular.
The most popular holiday locations for Brits include Spain, France,
Greece and the USA. Lots of people buy a package holiday. Flights
and packag e holidays are much cheap er during school term time
and the British governme nt is worried that some young people are
missing school to go on holiday. Parents who take their child on
holiday during term time can now pay a fine of up to 100 pounds.
British people also like to go on holiday in the UK: in England,
Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales. Warm weather and sun are
not guaranteed in the UK of course! What can young British
people do on a UK holiday? Taking your tent or caravan to stay on
a campsite is popular, especially in the south of England.
Newquay, in Cornwall, on the south coast of England, is a
favourite camping area for families and for teenagers. Newquay
has great beaches, with good waves for surfers as well as lots of nightlife. Wild camping means you take your tent,
sleeping bag, food, water (and toilet paper!) and you find a quiet place to spend the night in the countryside or hills
away from roads and houses. Wild camping is legal only in some parts of Britain.
Some teenagers want to spend their holidays doing something without their family. A language exchange is one
way to be more independent and improve language skills. A British teenager spends a week or two in a foreign
country, staying with a family who has a son or daughter of the same age and practises the local language. Later the
foreign teenager visits the UK to practise their English with the British family. Summer camps can be fun too. Do it 4
Real organises camps for 10-19-year-olds in the UK where young people can do quad biking, paintballing, fil m making
and street dancing. Theres also a Future leader camp for 7-19-year-olds where activities include leadership skills as
well as raft building, archery, climbing and survival skills.

Reading comprehension language use and vocabulary
Read the text about a Singaporean boys hobbies.

I have two hobbies. They are collecting coins and skateboarding. Collecting
coins is my indoor hobby while skateboarding takes me outside to experience
the fresh air. I find that they provide a nice balance of going out and staying in
during my free time.
Since I began collecting coins two years ago, I have met many others who
share the same burning interest. It started when my father brought home his
unused coins from his business trips. I thought some of them looked exotic.
They looked very different from our Singapore coins. I had a liking for the
various coins immediately and began collecting them. Now, whenever my
father goes on his trips, I beg him to bring home as many different coins as he can.
Today, I have over two hundre d coins from twenty -fo ur different countries.
My interest in skateboarding began differently. I started three years ago, when I was in
primary four, when a classmate of mine introduced skateboarding to me. At first, I found it
difficult to balance on a plank of wood on wheels. I also thought it was silly skateboarding
when rollerblading was so much easier and faster. But after two weeks of skateboarding
every afternoon, I began to love the wind blowing in my hair and the thrill I got going
places with it. Today, my favourite skateboarding area is the park by the beach where i t's
safe and I do not bump into people while skating. My two hobbies are important to me
because they help me relax. I dont want to study too much but I make sure that I do my
homework before I even think about my coin collection or skateboarding.

Clothes shopping on a budget!

Like many people, I absolutely love clothes shopping! But, as a student, I

dont have a lot of money to keep up with the latest fashion trends. Especially
when it comes to vintage clothes, which are in fashion at the moment. I cant
afford many things in vintage shops. I like to look on eBay, but I dont like to buy
clothes online because they dont always fit well when they arrive. I like to always
try on clothes in the shop before I buy them it makes each shopping trip much
more fun!
In England, we have shops called charity shops, where people donate their
old clothes, shoes, books, CDs, DVDs, and children's toys and games. In
America, they are called thrift shops, which you may know from Macklemores,
hit song! I love these shops, because you can often find a bargain, brand new
clothes with the tags still on them, or real vintage items which havent got a big
price tag!
The only downside to charity shopping is that you have to search through
everything in the shop, which can take a lot of time. Also, some times it is
disappointing. I have searched for hours before and not found a single thing to
buy! But this happens with big department stores in shopping centres too, so perhaps it is just occasional bad
luck! Most of the time, however, I have found some bargains, and saved lots of money! Occasionally, I have
found lovely handbags, new shoes, hardly-worn clothes, and some fantastic second-hand books and DVDs at a
fraction of the price that youd find in a normal shop. And the best part about charity shopping is that the money
goes to a good cause!

Last September, I went to Paris to visit some friends. We had a

great time, seeing the main sites and going out for dinner. But our
final day together was different and it all began with a scream.
We were at the Champs-lyses when we heard a girl's loud
scream. Then there was another. And another. The entire street
was soon filled with screams. Not knowing what to expect, we ran
towards the commotion and found ourselves in a large crowd
outside the Sephora's perfume shop. Stuck behind by a railing, the
crowd got bigger and bigger. All around us there were police
officers and security guards; furthermore, the media had arrived,
setting up their fancy cameras. The crowd, the media, the
screams it all began to make sense. Lady Gaga was in Paris.
Paparazzi soon arrived, eager to get an exclusive shot of the
pop star. Some fans would scream loudly for no reason, making
everyone else think that she had left the building. Cameras,
phones, iPads were suddenly up in the air like guns ready to fire
but she was nowhere to be seen. It was a rollercoaster of
anticipation, false alarms and disappointment. And it got hotter and
hotter. A young girl fainted and two police officers had to jump over
the railing to save her. But nobody took care of her afterwards
she sat alone on a bench, now unable to see her idol. Another two girls fainted.
Lady Gaga eventually left Sephora I was sure of it as the screams were louder than ever. She wore an unusual
white jacket and dark sunglasses. As soon as I saw her, I took out my phone and hit 'record'. But before I knew it, she
was out of my sight. I think she signed some autographs but she was gone in seconds. I don't know how long we had
waited; it didn't matter. I had Lady Gaga on my phone my reward for the long wait. Naturally, the paparazzi followed
her.
I've always sympathised with celebrities who are tormented and pursued by the paparazzi. It can't be easy having
the media always interfere in your personal life, the constant flash of a camera When I think of people like Britney
Spears and Princess Diana, I fully understand the negative side of the media and paparazzi. Celebrities are human
beings after all. Just like us, they deserve their privacy, their freedom, the ability to walk freely down the street
And yet, last September, I took a shot of Lady Gaga on my phone.
