Assignment 1: Information Literacy

I found my article on zdnet.com called Wearables open new avenues for
security and privacy invasions. The article is about how wearable technology is a
new way for you to keep your own personal private data to be collected. But the
downfall is that it can happen with your knowledge or without it. When you wear a
wearable device into the workplace and onto corporate network, the device might
ring security and privacy challenges for IT. Sonny Vu, founder of Misfit Wearables,
said: Giving up a degree of privacy is a price to be paid for using a wearable
device. That statement means only wear the watch if you are willing to give up
your privacy because you have no idea what they are going to do with that
information.
The first search engine I used was on Google and the article I found was
Online privacy fears are real on nbcnews.com. When I searched Privacy Articles on
Google there were about 1 billion results. The second search engine I used was Bing
and the article I found was Internet Privacy. When I searched on Privacy Articles
on Bing there was only 79 million. There was one better search engine and that was
Google. Personally, I am more comfortable with Google because I use it on a regular
basis. Also, Google had the date for when the article was posted but Bing did not.
Time- The article was posted on December 6, 2000 and the article has not
been updated.
Relevance- This article relates to my topic because it is about online privacy
and my topic is privacy.
Authority- The author was Bob Sullivan and he is qualified writer to write the
article. I found out that he is a senior writer for MSNBC.coms Technology section.
Bob also was the first to tell people that the FBI had developed a computer
program, called Magic Lantern, which was designed to steal public encryption keys.
I found this out by searching to figure out who he was and there was an article
about him.
Accurate- You have to be careful with online article but I believe that this
article seems trustworthy. I say this because it is from a reliable source because it is
from NBC News. The article is supported by evidence. For example, Sullivan talked
to Rick Jackson, a CEO of privacy technology firm Privada Inc., and Jackson talked
about how ad firms like DoubleClick is a privacy problem.
Purpose- The purpose of the article was to inform the reader. The article is
not bias because it is about how you do not know what people are tracking. The
article is also about all of the problems with the privacy you have.

The database I used was ProQuest the reason is because I have used it
before. The article I found was Privacy Problems in the Online Word. I used
ProQuest for my second article called Google Makes Peace with Privacy.
The ease of access was better for the databases because they give you a
synopsis before you read the article. For timeliness the articles loaded better on the
Internet databases then the school databases. The author that had the most
authority was Bob Sullivans article Only Privacy Fears Are Real. This is because he
was the most qualified for writing the article. This is because he has had past
articles discussing major topics.
