Dolce and Gabbana Mosaic History

Globalization has a various amount of different definitions. There is no

exact definition for globalization because I feel like everything we do and have is
globalization. I believe this because we are all apart of history and we are
making history everyday. Globalization is the involvement and development of
the world. It plays a huge part in history and culture, globalization focuses on the
development of the culture as the days pass. Anything that identifies as a
change of worldviews has an impact on the economy and culture of todays
world. History is also viewed as globalization because it has already happened
and it would never happen the exact same way. Globalization has a very broad
meaning toward it.
Art is a perfect example of Globalization. Art can be expressed in a
various amount of ways. Art can also be viewed differently; it depends on the

persons perspective. Globalization in art is unique concept because it could be

shown in various ways. Art could be shown as visual art, performing art,
decorative art and many more. We are surrounded by globalization and we are
also apart of it. We create the art and let it express our emotions and thoughts.
Art is found all over the world and some are historically treasured. Such as
mosaic art and the Renaissance art, as examples of different figures artifacts that
have been apart of globalization since the beginning of time. Art is used to
express cultures and to tell history.
The piece from the Portland Art Museum that I chose to write my paper
was from the exhibit Italian Style: Fashion Since 1945. Dolce and Gabbana
designed the piece I chose. This piece was designed in 2013 for the fall and
winter collection. Dolce and Gabbana are two Italian designers Domenico Dolce
and Stefano Gabbana. They met first met in 1980 in Milan, Italy. Their style is
considered as Mediterranean style with many different inspirations. One of their
top inspirations is from Sicily of Luchino Viscontis film The Leopard. (Reinach)
They introduced their first collection, Real Women in 1985. Dolce and
Gabbanas signature designs are corset dresses, gangster pinstripes and sexy
black suites (Dolce). They have created many different designs and they have a
different collection every season. They launched the D&G label in 1994, which
introduced their urban style.
This dress was apart of the Portland Art Museum exhibit Italian Style:
Fashion since 1945. The Fall/Winter collection of Dolce and Gabbana was
inspired by Sicily and the twelfth century cathedral Venetian and Byzantine
mosaics (Holgate). This dress was one of the few throughout the exhibit that

caught my attention. It reminded me of the Catholic religion. I admire Roman

Catholic art because it is apart of my life. The mosaic art was a favorite of mine
because of all the different patterns and colors in one piece but not as vivid as
stained glass art. Also the art has a story behind it whether it is the artist who
created it or the actual picture. The description of the dress did not address
whether the mosaic portrait was a notable Catholic character. I believe this is
apart of globalization because this was inspired by history. Most of the mosaic
artifacts are inspired by the Roman Catholic period. The twelfth century was the
time of the renaissance. The renaissance art was also known as the Gothic art,
which was a style medieval art.
The dress was under a light that made it shine and catches peoples
attention. The dress is made of silk, sequins and Swarovski crystals. The
crystals were stitched to enhance the picture and the pattern in the dress. The
colors of the dress are not as vivid as the picture. Dolce and Gabbana were also
able to incorporate their Mediterranean style in the dress. They were able to
keep their signature look with a design that would catch everyones eye.
The dress was remarkable. It made me reminisce on my childhood. For
anyone who grew up religiously and went to church often would be fortunate to
see this dress. The things I recognized in this dress were the glass-stained
windows in the chapel at my high school and at the Cathedral Church at Loyola
Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. Dolce and Gabbana were
experimenting with their designs and succeeded to catch the eye of their
audience. The dress had to be special if it was able to be apart of an exhibit at
the Portland Art Museum.

Art and fashion is apart of globalization. Different styles of art are symbols
of a period of time in history. Fashion uses every aspect in globalization. Fashion
is all over the world and each nation has its on type of fashion. It is not always
the same but similar in different parts of that nation. People are able to interact
through fashion, which makes it apart of globalization. Nations being able to
interact with one another through a popular aspect of the world makes it history.
Dolce and Gabbana are from Italy and they are one of the most famous
designers in the world. Their style is admired by the world and their art of fashion
is one for the books.
