Course Description
This course enables students to enhance their understanding of concepts in biology,
chemistry, earth and space science, and physics, and of the interrelationships between
science, technology, society, and the environment. Students will plan and conduct
investigations and develop their understanding of scientific theories related to the
connections between cells and systems in animals; chemical reactions, with a particular
focus on acidbase reactions; factors that affect climate and climate change; and the
interaction of light and matter. Students will make appropriate decisions in light of Gospel
values and Church teachings.
Course Content
Course expectations can be found at

Units of Study
Unit A Scientific Investigations Skills and Career Exploration
Unit B Tissues, Organs and Systems
Unit C Chemical Reactions and Their Applications
Unit D Earths Dynamic Climate
Unit E Light and Applications of Optics
Teaching/Learning Strategies
A wide variety of instructional strategies will be used to provide opportunities that
accommodate a variety of learning styles, abilities and interest levels (individual/ group
work, choice of format, open-ended exploration, development of concept from data, acquire
and apply knowledge in different contexts). Several skills (communication, inquiry and
learning) will be developed through experience and refined with practice.
Assessment and Evaluation of Student Performance
Evaluation will follow several opportunities for assessment. This provides the student with
feedback on learning so he/she may improve without penalties before final evaluation is
made. In order for this to occur more time will be spent on assessment and fewer
evaluations will take place.
Expectations are grouped into four categories of learning. The weighting of the categories
is as follows:
Knowledge / Understanding
20%

Thinking / Inquiry / Problem Solving

Application / Making Connections
Communication

40%
30%
10%

Course Grade Weighting

Term Work
70%
- includes unit tests, lab based inquiry, unit
research, assignments and applications.

Culminating Activity
30%
-includes a compulsory final exam and
a lab practical.

Due Dates
Students are expected to participate in their learning through assessment and evaluation as
scheduled. If an extension is needed then it must be communicated to the teacher by the
student. Difficulty with meeting this expectation will be reflected through Learning Skills.
Missed Evaluations
Every reasonable effort will be made to evaluate student learning fairly following
participation in learning activities and assessments. Students should arrange for early
evaluations if they expect to be absent. If no evidence is available for evaluation then a
missed mark of (M) may be given. Circumstances will be considered on an individual basis.
Cheating and Plagiarism
Academic honesty is expected of all students. Cheating is a direct attempt to use anothers
work as ones own, an act of deliberate dishonesty. Plagiarism is a form of cheating that is a
serious, legal, ethical and academic offence, be it intentional or unintentional. Students
have the responsibility to ensure that all work submitted is their own or appropriately
attributed to its source.
Course Fees
A course fees may apply for lab materials and field trips. Students are responsible for their
textbook (replacement cost is approximately $90.00). Text NEVER leave the class!
