Learning Goals:
I can identify literary devices found in song lyrics.
I can analyze the purpose of using literary devices in song lyrics.
I can identify the literal meaning and theme of a song.
I can collaborate with a partner to prepare a presentation for the class.
Task: With a partner, choose a song that uses literary devices in its lyrics. You will be
responsible for creating a presentation between 5-10 minutes in length. You will be
responsible for the following tasks:

Playing the song for the class. You should bring the song to class on a CD or a
flash drive. If you need help getting a copy, you must arrange with your teacher
ahead of time.

Explaining to the class what the song is about on a literal level.

Identifying the theme of the song for the class.

Providing a printout of the song lyrics. The song lyrics will be projected on the
screen for the class to see during your presentation. Literary devices that you will be
referring to should be highlighted in colour.

Analyzing the literary devices found in the song. Each student will need to
define two literary devices found in the song, and will need to analyze the purpose of
the devices. Why did the artist use these devices in their song? What further
meaning did you receive as a listener?

Use the following planner to develop your ideas.
