Term!one!is!already!at!an!end!and!daylight!saving!comes!into!play!this!weekend.!Thank!
you!to!all!those!parents!and!whnau!who!have!supported!our!team!this!term!and!
enabled!our!students!to!participate!in!such!an!exciting!range!of!learning!experiences.!!

Sport!has!been!at!the!forefront!of!our!minds!this!week.!I!know!our!country!acknowledges!
the!magnificent!effort!of!the!Black!Caps!and!many!discussions!have!been!had!praising!
the!spirit!of!this!team.!Our!schools!vision!is!based!on!our!values:!respect,!manaakitanga,!
excellence,!creativity,!community,!initiative!and!fun.!Having!role!models!living!strong!
values!sets!such!a!wonderful!example!for!us!all.!

But%as%each%of%you%played%your%game%over%the%past%few%weeks,%you%played%in%
such%a%way%that%I%could%point%to%you%and,%as%a%father%struggling%to%bridge%many%
gaps%for%my%sons,%say%to%them:%"Look,%whatever%you%do%in%life,%live%like%that.%

If%you%find%yourself%winning,%don't%gloat%over%those%around%you%who%may%have%
lost.%Be%free%to%play%life%hard%my%sons,%but%play%fair.%Play%with%respect%and%play%

Albans!Girls!A!team!cricket!match.!I!think!the!staff!learnt!
a!thing!or!two!from!the!girls!!

Our!Focus!on!Safety!Continues!
The!school!side!of!Westminster!Street!leading!to!the!rear!entrance!of!the!school!has!
become!a!hazard!for!pedestrians.!We!understand!that!not!all!of!these!cars!belong!to!
parents,!however,!if!you!are!one!of!those!drivers!we!ask!that!you!park!on!the!road!and!
do!not!mount!the!footpath.!Parents!with!buggies!and!tamariki!with!scooters!are!having!
difficulty!moving!past!these!vehicles.!!

Year!for!the!2014/15!season!(East!ChristchurchIShirley!Cricket!Club)!on!

pictured).!They!were!also!one!of!the!best,!most!
honourable!teams!in!terms!of!playing!the!ball!not!the!player.!They!got!better!and!better!
during!the!last!two!terms!and!after!a!few!hiccups!really!started!playing!as!a!great!little!
team.!!It!was!a!great!atmosphere!with!all!the!parents!that!could!attend!coming!and!
lounging!in!the!summer!sun.!It!was!run!really!well!by!Mainland!and!their!referees!so!
thanks!to!them!as!well.!

Well!done!to!our!seven!swimmers!who!competed!at!the!Canterbury!Swim!finals!on!
Monday.!The!calibre!of!competition!was!extremely!impressive!and!it!was!great!to!see!

Last!Friday!the!girls!cricket!team!played!in!the!semi!final!of!the!Primary!Schools!
Canterbury!Cricket!competition.!They!played!against!Fendalton!B!and!won!96!to!39.!All!
the!girls!played!well:!Top!scores!were!Niamh!with!37!runs!and!Caitlin!with!21.!All!our!
bowlers!bowled!well!especially!Caitlin!(1!over!for!no!runs)!and!Bella!M!(1!over!for!1!run).!

Canterbury!Primary!Schools!Cricket!Part!2!
The!final!was!held!on!Tuesday!where!the!girls!were!lucky!enough!to!be!invited!to!play!at!
Hagley!Oval!on!the!pitch!where!New!Zealand!began!the!World!Cup!6!weeks!ago.!They!
played!Fendalton!A!and!after!losing!the!toss!were!put!into!bat!first!for!their!12!overs.!
Nicole!and!Bella!S!got!us!off!to!a!good!start!compiling!17!runs!between!them!from!their!
allotted!3!overs!for!no!loss!of!wickets.!Caitlin!and!Bella!M!continued!the!run!gathering!
adding!another!18!for!no!wickets.!Next!to!bat!were!Niamh!and!Lucy.!Niamh!scored!a!
quick!fire!23!and!Lucy!8!to!lift!the!run!rate!!again!for!no!loss!of!wickets.!The!last!two!
batters,!Samantha!and!Javahni!added!14!more!runs!to!end!our!total!at!80!off!12!overs!for!
the!loss!of!only!1!wicket.!The!St!Albans!girls!were!on!fire!in!the!field!with!Nicole!effecting!
two!run!outs!as!wicket!keeper,!Lucy!a!run!out!square!of!the!wicket,!Niamh!a!catch!at!mid!
off!and!some!great!boundary!saves!by!Samantha.!Fendalton!battled!hard!for!runs!but!
were!restricted!by!some!good!bowling!!in!particular!Niamh!with!1!wicket!for!5!runs!off!2!
overs!and!Bella,!Nicole!and!Caitlin!all!with!just!6!runs!off!2!overs.!In!the!end!Fendalton!
managed!just!32.!St!Albans!School!are!once!again!Canterbury!Primary!School!Cricket!

needs!to!start!now.!Children!may!be!fit!from!playing!team!sports,!but!practising!running!
for!a!sustained!period!really!does!make!a!difference!to!their!performance!when!the!
competition!gets!harder.!!

Book!Week!Next!Term!!In!Week!10!of!Term!2!we!will!celebrate!Book!Week,!which!will!
include!the!now!famous!St!Albans!School!Book!Character!Parade.!!We!will!also!run!a!
Scholastic!Book!Fair!that!week.!!Perhaps!in!the!holidays!children!could!begin!to!organise!
