FBI Agent
Job Description

The FBI hires agents to act as the lead investigators for matters of national security for the
United States of America.

FBI agents need previous law enforcement experience, a college education and specialized
job training.

Job Description:
FBI agents are in charge of investigating over 200
different categories of violations related to national
security and federal law.
The criminal activity a FBI agent may investigate
includes: bank robberies, terrorism, corruption,
organized crime, and drug trafficking.
Common duties that FBI agents perform include
research, investigation and filling out reports.

Requirements:

FBI agents need to possess a college degree in criminal justice or a closely major.
Must be a U.S. citizen or a citizen of the Northern Mariana Islands.
You must be at least 23 years of age to apply and have not reached 37 years of age upon your
appointment as a Special Agent.
You must have at least three years of professional work experience.
You must also possess a valid driver's license and be completely available for assignment
anywhere in the FBI's jurisdiction.
All candidates that meet the Entry Program and Critical Skill requirements must also:
meet the Special Agent Physical Requirements and pass the FBI Background Investigation.
High School Preparation:
Because there are many areas of specialization at the FBI, high school students can prepare for a career as an
agent by maintaining strong grades across the curriculum. In addition, due to the physical and fitness
requirements and training, high school students should stay fit by taking gym classes and engaging in different
sports.

Special Agent High School

Requirements:
Student is a United States Citizen.
Student is currently enrolled in an accredited high
school. If home schooled, the student is recognized by
their school district.
Student has a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.
Students must attend college and acquire at least a
bachelors degree.
Students can not be a convicted felon.

Attainable degrees in Criminal Justice:

Associates Degree:These degrees require 65 credit hours, which can take
up to two years to earn.
Bachelors Degree: Youll need a total of 120 to 128 credits to get a
Bachelor degree, which can usually be earned in about four years.
Masters Degree: If you want a Master of Criminal Justice, youll need to
earn 30 credit hours after receiving your Bachelor degree.
Doctorate Degree: A PhD in criminal justice, it can take up to seven years
to earn the required 90 credit hours.

FBI Job Market

Special Agents:
According to the FBIs website, experienced special agents typically earn between
$60,000 and $70,000, depending on where they are assigned.
Special agents work erratic and unpredictable hours.
Although the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not provide specific
employment projections for FBI special agents, jobs for law enforcement officers
overall are expected to increase by 7% from 2010 to 2020.

Potential Income
Employment prospects and salary ranges typically vary based
on an individuals work history and educational
qualifications.
Special Agent trainees at the FBI Academy are paid as GS-10,
step 1 ($43,441) plus the Quantico, VA locality adjustment
(17.50%) during their time at the FBI Academy. This equates
to $51,043 on an annualized basis.
$1,963 per each two-week pay period.
