Science Reflection
Science is one of the subjects taught in schools in order to teach science in an elementary
school you need to know; matter and stability; energy, how molecules form to organism, earths
system, structure of organism, ecosystems, biological evolution, the universe, engineering and
design, human activity, motion, dynamics, interactions, unity and diversity, earths place in the
universe, and waves and their applications in technologies for information transfer.
When I took biology I learned about microorganism, the structure of organism,
photosynthesis, how animals evolve, and how animals are created. In my earth science class we
did a lot of hands on activities that I will use in my future classroom; I did a project that shows
the planets and their distance from each other; I also did a project on different rocks and
minerals; I have an earthquake map; I have a worksheet that identifies the structure of volcanoes.
During my physical science class I learned about gravity, inertia, magnetism, Bernoullis Laws,
the laws of energy and momentum; the periodic table; our elements, gases, chemical reactions;
and how chemical bonds create.
Although, I took courses in science I feel less prepared in areas such as biological
evolution, Laws of gravity, chemical bonds, how molecules turn into organism, and dynamics.
However, I feel well prepared in subjects like the universe, volcanoes, energy, magnetism, the
periodic table, earths formation, rocks, minerals, and the ecosystem.
In SMT 416(earth science), I did a lesson plan to demonstrate the differences between
weathering and erosion I will be using this lesson as part of my artifacts. Part of the procedure

was to give students a piece of snickers chocolate bar; I asked students questions such as What
layer of the Earth do you think the chocolate outside coating is going to represent? the students
will answer the crust. The lesson also includes hands on activity where students are asked to
gently pull the edges on the candy bar. The students will learn what type of tectonic plate
boundary the action represents; divergent. I will also be using a project where I drew the planets
based on information such as their rotational periods, their distance from the sun, the number of
moons they have; and the differences in color and texture.
In order to teach a subject like science, as a future educator the activity has to be fun and
creative. You tube, for example, is a great way to show students videos like volcanoes
eruptions, earthquakes, how rocks and minerals form, information about the planets, etc. As for
hands on activity you can create a fun engaging lesson by bringing objects or creating objects.
For example, when introducing rocks and minerals you could have real rocks and minerals and
you could ask students to describe them by texture, size, color, etc. When students are learning
about volcanoes you could demonstrate how volcanoes erupt by making a volcanoe; you could
use a plastic bottle covered with dirt, then you mix dish soap; water, red food coloring, and
baking soda; once you mix all of them together place them inside the bottle; finally add vinegar
and see how excited and curious your students reactions will be.
