Unit Title: Congruent Triangles

Name: Sahra Soliman

Content Area: Mathematics - Geometry

Grade Level: 9th/10th

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

7.0 Use the definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions to show that two triangles are congruent if and only if
corresponding pairs of sides and corresponding pairs of angles are congruent.
8.0 Explain how the criteria for triangle congruence (ASA, SAS, and SSS) follow from the definition of congruence in
terms of rigid motions
9. 0 Prove theorems about lines and angles. Theorems include: vertical angles are congruent; when a transversal
crosses parallel lines, alternate interior angles are congruent and corresponding angles are congruent; points on a
perpendicular bisector of a line segment are exactly those equidistant from the segments endpoints.
10.0 Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: measures of interior angles of a triangle sum to 180; base
angles of isosceles triangles are congruent; the segment joining midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to
the third side and half the length; the medians of a triangle meet at a point.
11.0 Prove theorems about parallelograms. Theorems include: opposite sides are congruent, opposite angles are
congruent, the diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other, and conversely, rectangles are parallelograms with
congruent diagonals.

Big Ideas:
The various kinds of congruent triangles: ASA, SAS, AAS, and ASS.
How to find a length of a triangle side, or the measurement of an angle?
What condition can you apply to prove a given two triangles?

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will learn the concepts of congruency and congruent triangles
They will utilize definitions, postulates and theorems
They will use the SSS, SAS, AAS, and ASA congruence patterns
Students will be able to recognize the difference between each condition to prove the congruence.
Students will develop their critical thinking skills.

Unit Summary:
In this unit, students will learn the difference between the five postulates rules in proving triangles congruence.
They will use each one to find any missing side length and the measurement of any angle. There are different
websites in the resources page that help students to demonstrate each rule. Students will participate in different
activities such as lectures, group work, and presentations. In addition, they will be able to get information from
other websites that I have provided in the webersice page, and then they will answer the question I have posted by
the due date.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
Survey/ Quiz This is an online
survey to determine your prior
knowledge and refresh the necessary
ideas for this unit plan.

Formative:
Questioning during lecture

Summative:
Exam - Students will be given an

measure their understanding.

exam which will cover all lessons in

this unit, for example, proving
congruent triangles using any of SSS,
SAS, ASA, AAS, and HL postulates.

Webercise Students will be given

a webercise that is formed from their
previous class discussion about
proving triangles congruency.

Mid- Lesson Quiz Student will be

given a problem to prove after
showing them a couple of example
where they will be allowed to work in
groups of two or three.

Graphic organizer Assignment

in flow chart form will be given to
students to upgrade their
understanding of the necessary
concepts for proving triangles
congruence.

Presentation This is a kind of

teaching techniques in which each
student will get two different grades
for this presentation; one grade for
the written part and the other grade
will be on the oral presentation. I will
be posting 25 multiple choices
questions. Another 25 fill in the plank
questions. In addition to that there
will be another 25 problems which
require complete proofs. Each group
of 5 students will get a sheet of 15
questions 5 from each kind - to
work them out. Then each group will
choose only five problems from their
work sheet to present in front of the
whole class.

Student
Learning
Objective:
Understand the
concepts of SSS,

the missing parts in the guided notes handout.
Students attempt problems in lecture with
classmates and workspace is provided on notes.
Students will write their own problem to test each
other student understanding of the vocabulary
concepts.

Lesson Activities:
Student will look at some websites to get the
required information for completing their
webercise.
Students will use their critical thinking to prove two
triangle are congruent.

Lesson Activities:
Students will fill in the blanks with given terms as
well as add on some additional postulates which will
require them reading the book and looking at the
exercises we have done before.

Unit Resources:
Math is Fun This link provides the five Postulates of congruent triangles.
Illuminations This is an interactive site in which you can practice how to prove two triangles are congruent.
IXL This also is another interactive site in which you will look at two congruent triangles to see if they are
congruent or not, and if they are congruent you will chose which rule explains the congruency.

Khan academy This link provides some YouTube videos explain the rules of triangles congruence; it also obtain
a variety of exercises to practice.
Soft School By clicking into this link, you will be able to do more activities about congruence by taking quizzes.
Mangahigh This link obtain very good interactive game that provides examples of congruent triangle. There are
two ways to do the proof; either using formal proof or using diagrams to determine the congruency.

Tutor Vista This link provides properties of congruence triangles and problems on congruent triangles and it
also provides live tutor.

Free Mathematics Tutorials this link provides information about Side-Angle- Side congruence postulate and a
parallelogram that is formed of to congruent triangles example.

Math Open Reference This link explain how to tell if triangles are congruent. It also provides more information

about why Angle-Angle- Angle doesnt work in congruency.

4 ways of proving triangle congruence This is You Tube video provided by Learning Assistance Center of
Howard Community College that explains the different ways of congruency.
