HowisKimJongUnoperatingtheseconcentrationcampsandbrainwashingthecitizens
ofNorthKoreaintofaithfullypraisinghimwithoutbeingputontrial?Afterthedeathofsupreme
leaderKimJongIl,hisevenmorecruelandirrationalsonKimJongUntookpowerasdictator.
DisregardingthemournofKimJongIlsdeath,citizensbelievedthatthepolicieswould
eventuallyeaseupespeciallyduetothefacttheyhaveanewruler.However,KimJongUnhas
onlymodifiedtheruletoincreasestrictnessandmadenopositiveimpactonthecountryshuman
rightsrecordbutonlybroughtabeginningtoanoppressionthatisshockinglysimilartothe
Holocaust.TheNorthKoreaOppressionisaprolongedandunjustdictatorshipofNorthKorea
undertheofficialruleofKimJongUn.Morethan200,000citizensofNorthKorea,including
theyouth,arenegativelyinfluencedandimpactedbythismoderndayHolocaust(
Human
RightsWatch
).However,awarenessofthisoppressionneedstobespreadinordertomakea
change.
Peoplewonderhowthisoppressionhasnotbeenpublicizedonthenewsorpresswhenit
initiallybegantotakeeffect.LittledopeopleknowthatthemediaofNorthKoreaisoneofthe
moststrictlycontrolledintheuniverse.NorthKoreasgovernmentsabilitytocensortheirmedia
allowsthemtocontinuewiththeirharshpolicieswithoutanuprising.Radios,cellphones,and

TVsetsbecamemorepopulartotheaverageNorthKoreancitizenaroundyear2012.However,
thesedevicesarepresettoconnecttoonlygovernmentfrequenciesandcomewithacautionlabel
topreventthebuyerfromtamperingwiththeequipment.IntheresidenceofNorthKorea,itis
extremelyagainstthelawtomanipulateanydeviceinthepursuitofgainingreceptionfromany
othercountry.Anotherreasonwhytheawarenesslevelisconsideredlowisbecauseoftourism.
Touristsarerequiredtofollowatourguideandarelimitedontakingphotos.NorthKoreaisnot
apopulardestinationbecausevisitingthereissharplysupervisedbythegovernment(North
KoreaNow).Alargeamountoftouristreallywanttodiscoverwhatisinsideofthese
concentrationcamps.
ConcentrationcampslocatedinNorthKoreaarethereasonwhythisoppressionis
describedasarepeatofthepast.Anestimationofabout120,000peopleareheldineachofthese
detentioncampsandabout400,000perisheachyearduetotorturefromsecurityguards,disease,
starvation,andexecution.Testimoniesrecordedbysurvivorsofthesecampsexplainhowthey
arefrequentlyforcedtoeatgrassandsoil,beatenupuntiltheyvomitblood,andexecutedifthey
failtoobeytheguards.TheseKoreanguardsarebrainwashedbythedictatortoperceivethe
prisonersnotashumanbeingsbutsimplyasslaves.Inadditiontothishorrificvisualdescription,
theconditionsinthecampsareunhealthyfortheaveragehuman.About100peopleareplacedin
oneroomtodormonaverage.However,inresultofhardwork,familiesareabletodormwith
eachotherincludingtheadditional100.Itisnearlyimpossibletoescapefromtheselifelong
detentioncamps.MostcampssuchasHoeryonghavebarbedwireand3300voltelectric
fenceswithhiddentrapsunderneaththesurface.Ontheotherhand,allcampshave1,000guards
whoallhaveautomaticassaultrifles,handgrenades,andtraineddogsequipped(FreeKorea).

ThistacticisoneofthewaystokeepKimJongUnandNorthKoreafromutilizingnuclear
weapons.
InOctober2006NorthKoreasaidithadsuccessfullytestedanuclearweapon,
spreadingalarmthroughouttheregion,Sincethen,intensivediplomaticeffortshaveaimedto
reininNorthKoreasnuclearambitions.Afteryearsofonandofftalks,adealwasthrashedout
inFebruary2007underwhichPyongyangagreedtoshutdownitsmainreactorinreturnforaid
anddiplomaticconcessions(BBC).IfNorthKoreadecidestoabusetheabilitytousenuclear
weaponsthennotonlyarethecitizensindangerbutthewholeworldis,especiallyifUnited
Statesdecidetoinvestigatethesecamps.KimJongUnhaspowertothepointwhereitseemsto
causefearamongstcountriesontheoutside,thatisthemainreasonwhythegovernmentwillnot
changeunlessitisforcedtodoso.IthasbeenrumoredalthoughnotconfirmedthatNorthKorea
maypossesschemicalweaponcapability.Thisisevenworsebecausetheywillbelegallyableto
usethisontheirprisonersbylaw.ItwillbejustlikethegaschambersintheholocaustandNorth
Koreasoppressionwillonlygetworseandmoreirrational.
Inconclusion,NorthKoreasoppressionruledbyKimJongUnneedstochangeforthe
betterofpracticinghumanrights.TodaypeopleexercisetheeducationoftheHolocaustandhow
itwasaterribletimeinhistory.Therefore,peopleneedtorealizethatthesametypeofeventsare
happeninginNorthKoreaandactionneedstotakeplacebeforeitistoolate.Asofnow,the
futureforNorthKoreaislookingdarkbasedonthelittletonoactionbeingtookplacenowand
thepoliciestoday.However,theevolutionofthecountrywilldefinitelychangeovertimeif
awarenesscontinuestospreadandactionisputforthimmediately.
