Unit Pre-Assessment:
2 weeks before the start of the unit, students will be given a multiple
choice ten question quiz covering basic aspects of voting.
The questions will be as follows:
1. What is a vote? A. A speech made by a president B. An expression
of choice made by ballot or voice. C. A law made by Congress. D. A
kind of test given to American adults.
2. Who can vote? A. Any adult 18 or older. B. Adults over the age of
25. C. Adult men 18 or older. D. Anyone who wants to.

Unit Post-Assessment:
At the end of the unit, students will be given the same quiz as above
again, but with the questions and answers shuffled so as to not be the
same.
On-going daily (progress-monitoring) Assessment:
SCALES: At the end of todays lesson, the teacher will give every
student a sticky note. She will ask the student to write their name on the
back of the sticky note, as well as 1, 2, 3, 4 on the front depending on
how well they think they understood todays lesson. The differing
meanings for each of the four levels are posted in the classroom. Once
they have written their response, they will be told to put their heads
down and keep them down until the teacher says otherwise. The teacher
will then collect the sticky notes, and make note of all of the students
responses.
KWL CHART: As the students follow along in the classes activities
with their KWL charts, the teacher will monitor their responses and

their ongoing activities to check if the students are on track with the
lesson.
ESOL/ESE accommodations
1. The teacher will review with students what they learned on the previous day
about how their vote counts.
2. The teacher will have the students turn to their shoulder partner and discuss
or draw one thing that they learned that stood out the most to them for 3
minutes.
3. The teacher will read a poem from The Presidents Stuck in the Bathtub.
By Susan Katz and ask the students to turn to their shoulder partner and draw
or talk about what issue or issues they believe the poem mentions.
4. The teacher will ask students to get into groups of 2 or 3 for the next activity.
5. The teacher will then pass out a KWL chart to each group of students.
6. The teacher will then tell the students that todays lesson is about Political
Issues.
7. As a class the teacher will ask the students what they know about the
political issues. The students will take turns answering and as the students
answer the teacher will be following along and writing the answer on the IWB
version of the KWL chart.
8. The teacher will then ask the students what they would like to know about
the political issues. The students will take turns answering and as the students
answer the teacher will be following along and writing the answer on the IWB
version of the KWL chart.
9. The teacher will then pass out a tablet to each group and a web quest sheet.
Web quest is attached.
10. The students will engage in a web quest where they will be searching on
various links about political issues.
11. The teacher will tell the students that all answers that they have to the
questions on the web quest sheet can go on their KWL chart. The students will
be filling or drawing in their KWL charts as they go through the various links
for about 15-20 minutes.
12. As the students are searching the web and filling in their KWL chart, the
teacher will be walking around the groups to monitor their comprehension.
Questions to consider:

What surprised you the most?
What did you already know?
What is something that you want to learn more about?
What is something that confused you?
13. If the students finish early have them turn to their partner and discuss their
findings on the website.
14. After the class is done, the teacher will have the students turn their attention
to the IWB. The teacher will ask each group to share 1 or 2 of their facts that
they found while searching the web. The teacher will be following along and
