F35B

Engine *Pratt and Whitney F135 Jet Engine.- Produces up to 50,000 pounds of force and has a rear
vectoring nozzle which allows the aircraft to make tighter turns.
*Rolls Royce Lift system- also known as the Integrated Lift Fan Propulsion System this jet
engine produces 17,600 pounds-force and allows the aircraft to take off and land vertically.

Armament * 2 internal weapon bays- 2 weapon mounts in each internal bay. One larger mount is
designed to carry small and medium sized bombs (2000lbs and under) the smaller weapon mount is
designed to carry a missile.
* 4 Under wing weapon mounts- 2 large mounts and 2 small mounts under each wing.
The larger mounts can carry bombs, external fuel tanks, and cruise missiles. The small mounts usually
carry a missile.
* 2 Wing tip weapon mounts- small mounts for carrying missiles
*GAU-12/U 25mm Gatling Gun- 4 barrel Gatling gun that shoots 25mm rounds at
about 20 rounds per second though limited to 2 second burst to avoid depleting ammo to quickly

Stealth System

*Triangular shape- The F35 has a low radar cross section primarily because of its
shape. The planes geometry was designed to redirect radar waves instead of reflecting them back to
their original source.
*Radar absorbing fiber material To augments its stealth the F35 also
incorporates a fiber radar absorbing material into its constructions. The exact nature and composition of
this material is classified and there is no public source for this information.
* Inside fin fuel tank- The rear vertical fins of the F35 are designed to carry extra
fuel this way external fuel tanks will be less likely needed. External fuel tanks will compromise the
stealth of the aircraft.
* Internal weapon storage- Carrying missiles and other weapons internally allow
the aircraft to maintain its stealth capabilities. Mounting weapons externally will compromise radar
stealth.

Cockpit

*Glass Touch Screen- F35 has a digital instrument display on a composite glass
lcd display that responds and can be controlled by touch.
*Panoramic Cockpit Display- There is an electronic display integrated in the
aircraft canopy that conveys various information to the pilot.
* Speech recognition system- Many of the aircraft systems and controls can be
controlled by the pilots voice using cockpit audio sensors and speech recognition software.

* Helmet Mounted display- A specially made helmet contains an electronic

display and replaces the HUD (Heads up display) found in most other aircraft.
* Ejection seat- A rocket propelled seat. If the pilot pushes the eject button the
canopy of the aircraft will blow off and a rocket will blast the pilots seat right out of the aircraft at a
slight angle. After wards a parachute located in the seat will deploy so the pilot will safely fall to the
ground.
*Life support systems- Various life support systems are located in the cockpit.
Systems that control the cockpits air pressure, temperature, and oxygen supplying systems for flying at
high altitudes.
*AN/APG-81 Radar- AN/APG-81 is an active electronically scanned array
(AESA) radar system designed by Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems for the F-35 Lightning II it
has air-to-air modes, plus advanced air-to-ground modes, including high resolution ground mapping,
multiple ground moving target detection and tracking, combat identification, electronic warfare
jamming, and ultra high bandwidth communications.

Avionics

*AN/ASQ-239 Radio and Infrared Tracking Sensor- AKA (Barracuda) provides

sensor fusion of Radio frequency and Infra red tracking functions, basic radar warning, multispectral
countermeasures for self-defense against missiles, situational awareness and electronic surveillance
employing 10 radio frequency antennae embedded into the edges of the wing and tail.
* Six additional passive infrared sensors are distributed over the aircraft as part
of Northrop Grumman's electro-optical AN/AAQ-37 Distributed Aperture System (DAS) which acts as
a missile warning system, reports missile launch locations, detects and tracks approaching aircraft
spherically around the F-35, and replaces traditional night vision goggles.
* Advanced data link system- is a fast switching narrow directional
communications data link between stealth aircraft. The electronics communications are directed in a
narrow beam. This allows electronic communications with out compromising stealth.
* Fly By Wire Flight control.- flight controls are completely controlled
electronically and by computer software. The computer monitors the aircraft state and makes constant
correction in order to keep the aircraft stable. The aircraft was designed to be unstable and constant
corrections haft to be make to keep level flight. The on board computer systems can do this
automatically for the pilot.
