Project: Human Disorders

Introduction
Welcome to the fascinating study of human health and disorder. In this independent research project you will be given the opportunity
to explore your choice of an area of human health and disorder from a list of approved topics. You will be learning more about the
basic biology of disorder-causing organisms (pathogens) and human defense mechanisms (the immune system). You will also find out
more about some modern solutions to the treatment of disorder.

Task
Your task will be to produce a thorough power point presentation on one human disorder. Your final form of the
presentation will need to include all the elements listed on the presentation rubric that will be provided.
In brief, the following elements are necessary for a complete presentation:

1. The Power Point Presentation will include at the minimum 15 slides. The more creative the power point
presentation (Transitions between slides, color, pictures, videos, different types of slides, etc..) the more credit
you will receive. Slides should include the following:
2. A short introduction to the disorder which will include a short statement on each of the following
topics:
1. The nature of the disorder (what symptoms does the disorder produce, or what body
system does the disorder attack).
2. The cause of the disorder
3. The prevalence of the disorder (How many people are affected by the disorder).
4. The range of the disorder (who does it affect).
5. The severity of the disorder (How "bad" is the disorder? Is it fatal? How many people who
catch the disorder actually die of this disorder?)
6. Any other interesting facts about the disorder.
3. The basic biology at least the following:
a. An illustration or photograph of the pathogen.
b. How the disorder is passed on in humans.
c. What human systems does the disorder affect?
4. The immunological response to the disorder.
a. How the immune system responds to the disorder.
How the disorder is diagnosed and treated including:
b. Typical symptoms
c. Prevention of the disorder
d. Medical treatments including:
i. Modern medicine or drug therapies
ii. Vaccines
iii. The course of the disorder and its prognosis. (What is the typical fate of the
individual who catches this disorder?)

The Final Slide Will include a list of your sources.
