Topic: Expanding linear Expressions
Grade: 7
Objective: Students will be able to see how linear expressions with rational coefficients expand
and they will be able to do it themselves.
CCSS: CCSS.7.EE.A.1-Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and
expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
Materials: Expression cards and worksheets for students
Procedures:
1. Model and Teach-I will do a small lesson on expanding linear expressions and model
how to do it.
2. Activity: I will hand out a worksheet with expressions on them and the students will have
to go around the room to find the matching expression.
3. There will be 20 clues around the room on the walls and the students should walk from
sheet to sheet in a timed and orderly fashion to find the clues that match the ones on their
sheet.
4. When finished, we will check to see if the answers are correct and if there are any
questions.
5. I will hand out a worksheet for practice
Closure/Homework: Ask questions on ways to expand expressions and what was learned. For
homework have then finish worksheet.
Assessments: Open Tasks and Constructed Responses
I will give the students a task where they will have to do 5 problems and explain different ways
to simplify linear expressions. They will have to also write it in different ways.
Example:
(x+2)-x(x-6)
How can this expression be simplified? Explain your steps. Write it in another way.
Rubric for Open Task Assessment: For each question is 2 points. Highest score is 10
