Topic: Lesson 5.7: Linear Inequalities in Two Variables
Grade: 9
Common Core Standards: CC.9-12.A.REI.12 Graph the solutions to a linear inequality in two
variables as a half- plane (excluding the boundary in the case of a strict inequality), and graph the
solution set to a system of linear inequalities in two variables as the intersection of the
corresponding half-planes.
Materials: Graph paper, tangram pieces, stopwatch, smart-board, notebook and pencil
Start up: Students will graph one line, y=x on a graph paper. A model will be on the board for
them to follow.
Steps:
1. Explore:
Hand out tangram pieces in envelopes to each table to solve a puzzle
Show an image on the board and ask the students to predict how long they think it
will take them to create the same image using tangram pieces.
Give them about 3 minutes to actually complete the puzzle and then have them
write down the time it actually took them to complete it and record it on a table
where x is their actual time and y is their predicted time.
Write on board their results and have them plot the points on their graph where
they drew the line
Repeat for another image
2. Discuss:
Ask what they notice about the points on their graph for the ones under the line
and the ones above the line.
Explain how they will write it to represent it as an inequality.
3. Go over the previous homework and tie it with the lesson.
4. Use the homework to explain how we shade above or below a line for its solutions
according to the inequality.
Closure/Homework: Ask what was learned that day and hand out a worksheet for homework
where the students will graph inequalities and shade in the solution.
Follow-up: Continue to work on problems with inequalities and go over more examples
Modifications: Hands-on and visuals
Assessment: Closed Tasks

I will give students a chapter quiz from the textbook next day to see if they understood the
material.
