Sample Lesson Plan: General Music, 6th grade
1. Objective: Student will compose a 4 beat pattern loop with beatlab over ambient
music found on YouTube, and then will correctly imitate it with body percussion.
2. Procedures/Activities:
(a) Teacher will demonstrate a sample drum beat pattern loop with beatlab over
ambient music found on YouTube.
(b) Students will imitate the pattern with body percussion (claps, pats and stomps).
(c) Students will open beatlab.com and https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=pPTYlomyo3s and will listen to the ambient music and play with the beatlab
functions for approximately 3 minutes.
(d) Students will create a 4 beat pattern to play over the ambient music in 10
minutes.
(e) Students will play their creations one at a time, and the class will echo the beat
pattern with body percussion.
(f) Teacher will explain an assigned homework activity that will be due the next class
period.
3. Assessment: Students will echo each others compositions with body percussion
and the student composer and teacher will determine if the beat was adequately
imitated. Student composer will provide corrections or feedback until the class can
correctly echo the beat. Students will also be given an assignment to be assessed
next class period.

Assignment
Instructions:
(a) Compose a 4 beat pattern loop on beatlab under the following parameters:
- One beat type must appear consistently on 1 and 3

- Beat pattern loop must have at least 3 different beat types


- Beat pattern loop must be under either fast or normal tempo marks
- Beat pattern loop must have at least one sound on each quarter note
- Beat loop pattern must use a genre that is not the original genre presented
by the website

(a) Submit a screen shot of the loop with a small paragraph of explanation of beat
pattern, and submit via canvas by April 30th, 2015.
