Over the past couple weeks weve been learning about human rights. This week we
looked at some of the artistic expressions of those rights and worked on our own
expressions of those rights for Human Rights Day on Wednesday, December 10th.
Weve also heard a couple examples of human rights songs and were all looking
forward to hearing Dom, Owen, and Ronins song on Monday. But today were going
to look at this musical component a little more in depth.
So why do we listen to music?
When we listen to music what do we listen for?
Do we listen to the beat? The melody? How about the lyrics?
They call music the universal language, meaning that it has the ability to break
down barriers, form connections, and communicate messages across cultures. So
naturally, music can often deal with universal themes such as human rights.
Today we are going to look at some songs that do just that. As we listen we want to
focus, especially, on the lyrics. We are going to look at 5 or 6 songs (depending on
time) but there are lots more out there for you to find.
