Unit: Music Literacy
Materials Needed: I Love The Mountains song chart, Ebeneezer Sneezer song chart,
boomwhackers, Carnival Of The Animals book, Carnival Of The Animals Recordings, Carnival
Of The Animals listening maps, fish manipulatives
National Standards Taught:
1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
Objectives: Students will be able to
1. Perform I Love The Mountains with motions and singing.
2. Perform Ebeneezer Sneezer with motions, singing, and boomwhackers.
3. Hear contour in music and show it with their bodies.
Procedure:
I Love The Mountains-5 minutes
1. Have the students echo on small phrases and then larger phrases.
2. Sing the whole song and then have students join in and sing it all together.
3. Demonstrate the motions in small sections and have the students try it and echo back with
singing and motions.
4. Perform the whole song with motions and singing.
Boomwhackers-15 minutes
1. Sing Ebeneezer Sneezer and have students follow the motions.
2. Ask them if they notice what is happening to their voice while they move.
3. Have the students sing along and do the motions one more time.
4. Give out boomwhackers and have students play on their color while the rest of the class
does the motions.
5. Repeat the song until everyone gets a turn on the boomwhacker part.
Carnival Of The Animals Aquarium-15 minutes
1. Read The Aquarium poem for the class.
2. Play the piece for the class while pointing to the listening map. Have them listen for what
they think the shape and placement of the fish mean.
3. Pass out fish and have the students move their fish along with the map and what they hear
in their seats.
4. Play The Aquarium and have students move around the room with their fish to what they
hear and the map if they need it.
Carnival Of The Animals Kangaroo-5 minutes
1. Read The Kangaroos poem for the class.
2. Watch the listening map while listening to the music.
If Time

1. Read The Fossils poem and tell students to listen for a hidden song that they already
know.
Assessment:
1. Students can accurately perform I Love The Mountains with motions.
2. Students can accurately perform Ebeneezer Sneezer with motions, singing, and
boomwhackers.
3. Students can hear contour in Carnival Of The Animals and show it with their bodies.

note cards, Carnival Of The Animals book, Carnival Of The Animals Listening maps,
boomwhackers, I Love The Mountains boomwhacker chart
National Standards Taught:
1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
5. Reading and notating music.
6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
Objectives: Students will be able to:
1. Perform I Love The Mountains with motions and singing in a round.
2. Notate music correctly on their floor staff with their teammates.
3. Hear contour in music.
Procedure:
I Love The Mountains-10 minutes
1. Have the students echo on small phrases and then larger phrases.
2. Sing the whole song and then have students join in and sing it all together.
3. Demonstrate the motions in small sections and have the students try it and echo back with
singing and motions.
4. Perform the whole song with motions and singing as a class.
5. Explain that the song can be sung as a round just like when they played Frere Jacques and
split them up into two groups and stand in those groups.
6. Review what it means to sing in a round and try to perform it as a class with motions.
7. If it goes well try three groups.
Floor Staff Game-20 minutes
1. Review the notes on the staff with the class.
2. Split the class into two groups and have them group up around their floor staff.
3. Explain that there will be a word card that they will need to put onto the staff with their
circles as a group. Students will choose a group leader to raise their hand when they have
the right answer.
4. Start with one note and then move up to words and keep score.
Carnival Of The Animals-5 minutes

1. Read The Aquarium poem for the class.


2. Play the piece for the class while pointing to the listening map. Have them listen for what
they think the shape and placement of the fish mean.
3. Read The Kangaroos poem for the class.
4. Watch the listening map while listening to the music.
If Time-Boomwhackers
1. Pass out the boomwhackers and sing I Love The Mountains with boomwhacker
accompaniment.
2. Switch so that everyone gets a turn.
Assessment:
1. Students can accurately perform I Love The Mountains in a round with motions and
singing.
2. Students can accurately notate pitches on the staff with their teammates.
3. Students can hear contour in Carnival Of The Animals.
