Shared Text for whole class: A school like mine: A unique celebration of schools around the world.
2007, DK Publishing

Consider your role for whole class and focus group instruction:
Read aloud

BEFORE (6 mins)
Pinpoint some of the countries we will be visiting in the text.
Key questions (see Appendix 1)
This book has varies stories on children from around the world. We hear about where they live, their families and schools. Today we need to
focus on the information about the school.
Create a section on the board for unfamiliar vocabulary.

DURING (10 mins)

The purpose of this book is to provide an insight into the lives of children just like you. This book allows us to explore what school is like
around the world.
Create a section on the board for unfamiliar vocabulary and add to it as you read.
Read a select page. Clarify unfamiliar vocabulary on the page and add to the board.
Discuss new information and how it is different to the students prior knowledge of school.
Record some of these observations on the board.

AFTER (10 mins)

Put the students in groups of 3-4 and complete the three sticky notes titled Think, Puzzle, Explore (familiar activity).
Groups will choose one of the pages focussed on in the read aloud and will have access to a photocopied page.
Prompts to activate prior knowledge (See Appendix 1).

The groups will then transfer these ideas onto a large piece of paper, rereading the text and adding to it as they go. Extend on these notes by
thinking about any possible connections between this text and School of the Air.
Students to record possible answers to their puzzles.
Extension: Use the iPads to Google some of the countries and queries.

Focus pages: Yasmin and Anna from Brazil pg 13; Xinpei from China pg 62 (see Appendix 2)

Students will be shown the unseen page and will be asked to brainstorm together their initial responses, with a scribe recording this on the
pape complete 3-2-1 Bridge:
3 words they use to predict/describe what the text might involve
2 questions they have
1 metaphor/simile

Prompts (see Appendix 2)

Guided reading is followed by a repeat of this thinking and recording in response to the text.
Group discussion will take place over how the text connected to their initial responses and prior knowledge and connects to their new ideas.

Each child will share similarities and differences.

ASSESSMENT: Observe the students, completing the checklist (see appendix).
