Kenneally sees this as a marked shift

publishers and help indie publishing
dominate, and perhaps replace, the

have established themselves outside
the traditional model.

Market Smarts

Attendees at uPublishU will also

learn how to apply the marketing
strategies and data analysis used by
larger publishing houses to their own
self-publishing efforts. Workshops
such as Book Marketing Best Practices and Sell More E-Books: Tips
& Tricks Based on Actual Data will
help authors consider how they
promote and sell their books.
Looking at purchasing information has always been part of what
traditional publishers do, and indie
authors have to start doing the same
thing, Dedecker says. Her examples
include tracking data about what
genre is trending up or down, or what
styles of cover art are selling well. This
is all part of what indie authors have to
consider.
In another session, titled The New
Publishing Timeline, authors discuss
how to make the biggest impact ahead of
the release of a book and e-book. This
panel will walk attendees through creating early buzz, generating preorders, and
being proactive long before the book is
actually released.
To this end, Mark Coker, founder of
Smashwords, will be leading a workshop
on how authors can hit the e-book bestseller list by making preorders more central to a books promotional strategy.

Coker will also be running the related

explains how an author can navigate the
increasingly crowded e-book landscape.
This will consist of 20 tricks, tips, and
tactics for how indies can publish with

Coker emphasizes that the self-publishing market has maturedand this

FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY

Coker sees as an inevitable stage in its

development.
The easy days are behind us, Coker
says. But he adds that this should not discourage authors. The readers are out
there, and theyre buying books. All a
writer has to do is publish like a professional. That means honoring the reader by
writing a great book that takes the reader
to an emotionally satisfying extreme.

Maturing Industry

Cokers assessment of the industry was

echoed by other speakers and panelists
taking part in this years uPublishU:
while self-publishing is maturing, with
more opportunities than ever, it is also
more competitive than ever.
Its easier than ever before to publish,
but its harder than ever before to sell,
says Cindy Ratzlaff, brand marketing
specialist for Brand New Brand You and
longtime publishing veteran, who will
be hosting the session Advanced Social
Media Strategies. She adds, A handful
of authors are selling tens of thousands of
books, and tens of thousands of authors
are selling a handful of books.
Ratzlaff says that successful authors
now dont just upload their book to one
sales site and tweet about it. They have a
sales funnel, a series of next books in the
works, a remarketing plan, and theyre
building platforms from which to promote that go beyond Facebook and a
blog.
Though most authors have a basic
grasp of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, they are now at a point where a
deeper dive is valuable. During her
workshop, Ratzlaff will help authors
learn how to share links and see what
drives sales on social media, and she will
offer case studies about the successful use
of social media.
Among the points Ratzlaff will be discussing is the new online tool Heyo,
which allows authors to offer a PDF of
their books to Facebook fans who type
buy in the comments sectionsending a
link directly to them through their Facebook account. She will also discuss the
new point-of-sale strategies and setting

42 P U B L I S H E R S W E E K L Y M A Y 1 8 , 2 0 1 5

up sales directly from an authors Facebook or LinkedIn landing page.

Ratzlaff explains that even though the
first phase of social media marketing for
authors was connecting to readers,
authors must consider whats next: playing publicist, advertising director, and
sales team (or delegating these tasks to
the right people).
The reality is you need help, agrees
Dedecker, pointing to the Building
Your Team session, which will look
more deeply at why and how an author
can expand her effort beyond a oneperson program. If youre going to get
discovered, you really need to pick your
team.
Attendees can build their team right
at the conference by visiting uPublishUs
Author Marketplace. Organizations such
as Lulu, Indie Reader, Book Grabbr, the
Editorial Freelance Association, and
BookBaby will be on hand to describe
how they can help writers take their
game to the next level. Each will have
a table, offering information as well as
specials and discounts for attendees.
Authors will also have a chance to network with panelists and service providers
during the shows lunch break. Since the
schedule only allows for an hour at lunch,
Dedecker has eschewed the usual lunchtime speaker for a more active, and
casual, period for networking. Its going
to be a networking lunch, where everyone can share and talk and where a lot of
authors will pick up little tidbits of information not only from fellow authors,
but from the speakers and some of the
exhibitors.

Opportunities Further
Afield

The growth of international sales will

also be discussed at this years uPublishU, with a session dedicated to this very
topic. After authors work to get their
books into industry databases and the
major e-book retailers, libraries, and
book stores, the next step is to consider
foreign rights, translations, and other
options outside the U.S.

U P U B L I S H U AT B E A
There is a global e-book market that
is just on the cusp of exciting new
growth, says Mark Lefebvre, director of
self-publishing and author relations for
Kobo, who will be hosting the panel
International Markets and Indies.
He compares the state of international
publishing to what the U.S. market
looked like three or four years ago. He
points out that Kobo is seeing huge
growth not only in English-language
markets outside the U.S.Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the U.K.but also
in non-English-language territories such
as France, Italy, and the Netherlands.
Lefebvre adds that this focus on
opportunities beyond the U.S. comes at
a time when the self-publishing market
appears to be stabilizing.
Indie authors are recognizing two
key factors for success: going wide with
their titlesensuring their work is
available at all retailers globally and not
just a single U.S.-based companyand

INDIE SUCCESS

Kinky Kilts
A 19-year-old author scores with Scottish romance
BY JENNIFER MCCARTNEY

ighlander novels are

hot. Diana Gabaldons
Outlander, set in the
Scottish Highlands,
hit #1 on the New York
Times bestseller list. The Starz television
series adapted from the book is also a hit.
There are 5,800 books with highlander in
the title listed on Amazonincluding
Tracy Brogans bestselling Highland
Surrender series. Riding this wave of
popularityis The Highlanders Touch, a historical Scottish romance self-published
by 19-year-old D.K. Combs.
Early in 2014, The Highlanders Touch
had amassed 7.4 million reads and nearly
300,000 votes on Wattpad. Combs began
to think about self-publishing in order
to help pay the billsshed recently
moved out on her own after graduating
high school. She had close to 35,000
followers on the site, and she notes that
many of them were supportive and
encouraged her to make the jump to selfpublishing. Her mother also had some
input. She wants me to publish, so thats
what shes making me do,
Combs jokes.
Combs published the book
in the spring 2014, leaving
seven chapters on Wattpad
for free to entice new readers.
She made the book available
for purchase exclusively
through Smashwords (its not
even available on Amazon)
a move considered unusual
in an environment where
authors crave exposureand shes done
no traditional publicity for it, although
Combs says she has plans to do some in
the future, when her life is a bit more
settled.
In spite of this, The Highlanders Touch,
priced at $4.99, became a popular title

on Smashwords, appearing on the companys bestseller charts earlier this year.

All sales I make are from word
of mouth, she says. Though she wont
disclose the exact amount, she confirmed
that her earnings are nearing five figures.
Mind you, this is without promoting
[it] avidly like I should be, she says. So
I do have a ways to go before I make any
real progress, but Im prepared to work
for that.
The novel that won her so many fans
on Wattpad is a gender-bending tale
about two sisters travelling to meet Kane
the Lion Shaw at his highland castle.
The twist is that the younger sister,
Saeran, must pose as a boyand soon
finds employ as Shaws squire. When
Shaw accidentally sees Saeran dressed as
a woman he quickly falls in love with her.
And soon, her double life becomes increasingly complicated. The novel is
awash with Scottish phrases and terminology, such as dirks and lasses although
the author lives in Kentuckyfar from
the highlands she writes about. Her fans
have called her the Cliffhanger
Queen, she says. I love
building suspense, and apparently they love that I do.
Combs interacts with her
readers through Wattpad,
Facebook, and Ask.fm,
although she left the latter
site for a period after encountering problems with online
harassment. Anonymity
gives people a sense of power,
and sometimes they use it for reasons that
arent very... nice, she notes. She found
Wattpad to be a better regulated and
safer experience for interacting with fans.
Very rarely will anyone actually say anything [inappropriate] on Wattpad to me
now, she says. The second someone gets

out of hand and [my fans] find out about

it, [they take] down the threat before I
even know about it.
Inspired by her favorite authors J.R.
Ward and Sherrilyn Kenyon, Combs says
she began writing in middle school. She
found she never clicked well with the
other kids, so she turned to reading for
company and eventually to writing. Her
process is straightforward, she says.
When she isnt at work or playing Grand
Theft Auto V, she writes by composing
large chunks, which she then goes back
over and editsa process she repeats until the book is complete. Editing is done
with the help of two close friends. They
help me with plot holes, planning, proofreading, and editing, she notes. Combs
and her friends design the covers themselves using Photoshop.
As for the reaction of her friends and
family to The Highlanders Touch, she says
the response has been varied. Most are
like, Woah, thats so cool! while others
are like, What, you write porn now or
something? Her advice to other writers
is to have an emotional support system
in place, and to use it when needed.
Most times I use my dog just to get my
mind off of things, and when I come back
from the cuddles, my mind is more
clear, she says, adding that this helps
with the stress of wondering, Am I
eally good enough to be doing this?
Luckily, she notes, she also gets emotional support from her readers: Thank God
I have some of the best fans an author can

earn.

HYBRID PUBLISHING

Not All Hybrid Publishers

Are Created Equal
How Authors Should Evaluate Their Choices
BY

JANE FRIEDMAN

ince 2013, Ive been maintaining a chart on the key

book publishing paths for
authors. My goal is to help
people cut through the
confusion of the increasing number of
options availablefrom traditional
publishing to self-publishing, and everything in between.
Its that in between part thats vexing.
Its become nearly impossible to categorize certain publishers and services;
some wish to avoid being labeled
altogether. They consider themselves
innovators, providing an important
alternative for authors. Some in the industry have been using the label hybrid
publisher for these services, but thats
no helpnot when every hybrid has a
different business model.
Authors need specialized knowledge
of the industry to evaluate these hybrids
effectively and to understand the underlying value of a service and whether it has
the power to make a difference in their
books success. Here are questions I use
to help authors evaluate their choices
(I will be using the terms publisher and
service interchangeably):
Will there be a traditional print run
and whos paying for it?
A print run equates to an investment
someone is taking a financial risk on the
books success. Having a specific number
of books printed anticipates sales and
marks confidence that the book will be
actively stocked in bricks-and-mortar
stores. Authors shouldnt pay for their own
print runs unless they know exactly how
and to whom those books will be sold.

Will the book be pitched to retailers

or distributors by a sales team?
This means that the publisher calls on
specific retail accounts and distributors
to secure orders for the book in advance
of publication. This step is very unlikely
unless theres investment in a print run
as well as a marketing plan.
How will your books be distributed?
Anyone can get a book distributed through
Ingram and Amazon via print-on-demand,
as long as the files meet certain basic standards. If your book is listed via Ingram, all
book retailers can place orders for it. (That
doesnt mean your book will ever sit on a
physical shelf, but it can be ordered
through a store.) If a publishing service
touts being distributed through Ingram,
thats not necessarily a selling pointyou
can do that on your own.
Its rare for pay-for-play services to
actively sell and distribute physical copies
to bookstores, which is costly and requires
industry contacts. (A few are Greenleaf
Book Group, She Writes Press, InkShares,
and Matador.)
But print distribution isnt the only
reason to work with a hybrid publisher.
In the case of firms that focus on e-book
distribution, authors must assess their
own strengths and consider whether their
books would be more successful if they
had a service partner supporting them.
When evaluating a service, look for
signs that it will be a good business partner and likely to produce a successful
book. Due to the extreme ease of publishing and distributing books in digital format, anyone can put out a shingle and call
him- or herself a publisher. So here are

some additional questions to consider:

Whats the editing process like?
Some services will take exactly what you
give them and publish it, without any
editing. Even if that sounds appealing,
this shows a lack of professionalism. Virtually no manuscript is ready for prime
time without some editorial work.
What marketing and promotion support do their titles receive?
Ask what the services baseline marketing
plan is for each title. Does it send out
review copies? Does it write a press release?
Does it submit the book to media outlets
for coverage? Find out the bare minimum
it commits to, and if it does little more
than make the title available for sale,
rethink why you want to publish with it.
Can you speak to recent authors?
This can be the best litmus test of all. Are
other authors pleased with the publishers
communication and level of involvement? How much value did the publisher add to the process?
Finally, before committing to any service, get clear answers on costs, and read
your contract carefully. If things go
wrong, know when and how you can hit
eject (and at what cost) so you can pursue

a better path.

publishing at the University of Virginia and

Authors are making choices based on

independent publishing may be the
