Printmaking- Seniors
Class: Seniors in an art room
Time Needed:
a. Day 1- Discussion about project and power point with an example of Kathe
Kollwitzs prints to practice discussing artwork.
b. Day 2- Guest speaker, looking at linoleum, talking about different project topics
and ideas for each, sketching, demo if time.
c. Day 3- Demo if not done last class, transfer sketch to piece of linoleum and start
carving.
d. Day 4- 7- Finish working on linoleum
Art Background Related to the Lesson: Talk about different types of prints, and different
materials you can use to create a print like a monoprint, wood block, linoleum, etching, screen
printing and others. Looked up different printmaking artists and looked at different works on
paper.
Subject: The subject of this lesson is to teach the students about printmaking and how to create
different types of prints. The students will also be learning about different print making artists,
and looking for a work that they particularly like to critique and answer questions about. Then
the students will be creating their own project using a list of possible subjects that they can
choose from.

o Following a discussion about printmaking and looking at different prints,
students will be able to talk about and discuss prints and the qualities of them.
Creative Skills
After looking at examples of different prints and styles by different artists,
students will create their own linoleum print from a possible subject of
their choice.
Craftsmanship Skills
o Students will demonstrate good craftsmanship when they are creating their
linoleum cut. They will be expected to have nice and clean cuts.
o Students will be expected to have nice craftsmanship when they are printing
their print. They will have to make sure their linoleum is lined up in the
middle of the paper.

Questions to ask the students after discussion:
1. Explain why you think Kathe Kollwitzs artwork is so
dark?
2. Why do you think that she chose the subjects that she
chose?
3. What do you think is the importance of Kathe Kollwitzs
work?
4. What is your interpretation of what is happening in this
print?
Learner Outcomes:
Students will successfully create their own linoleum print based on a topic of their
choice
Students will follow correct procedures for carving their image into the linoleum
Students will follow the rubrics while working to see what is required of them
Students will complete a sketch before they start working that will count as a
grade
Students will learn about different types of prints and some different printmakers
Safety Considerations:
Use a bench hook when cutting, and NEVER cut toward yourself. Keep hand out
of the line of cutting path. If there is a cut, we have band aids and a nurse.
Alternatives to the Lesson: When students are finished working, they could create and just
make a simple sketch of a different topic. If there is linoleum left, they could make a different
idea that they would like to do.
Procedure: Introduction:
Day 1:
a. Motivation- I will show the students my sample. We will learn briefly about
printmaking and different types of prints. The students will be looking at prints by
different artists and they will be picking a print that they like and they will analyze
and look at the print and answer a packet of 4 questions. We will be doing this in the
library.
Day1: Printmaking packet
Day 2: Guest speaker, looking at linoleum, talking about different project
topics and ideas for each, sketching, demo if time.
Day 3: Demo if not done last class, transferring image, starting carving
The rest of the time the students will get 4-5 days to work on their linoleum
cuts
As students start to finish, we will talk about actually printing those.
Day 7-8- Printing the linoleum prints
c. Teacher-pupil appraisal of activity- The students work quality will show how well
I taught this lesson. I will ask questions as the students are cleaning up to see how
well they were paying attention.
Teacher Evaluation: I will know if the goals were accomplished based on student success
of the project. The students will be picking their own project. I can look at their sheets or
ideas, and their sketches, and I can see how well they did interpreting their ideas.
Student Evaluation:
Students will receive a grade out of 100 points for this project.
