Letter from Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney to Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, urging Miner to block any effort to re-establish a scrapyard near Onondaga Lake.
Mayor, City of Syracuse 233 East Washington Street Syracuse, NY 13202 Dear Mayor Miner, The purpose of this letter is to express my opposition to any plan that proposes operating the former Roth Steel site as a scrapyard or any form of metal processing facility. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent cleaning up the mess that past industries created by polluting Onondaga Lake. Significant progress has been made and we are now seeing a rebirth of the lake as the asset to our community that it should be. There is development at the inner harbor, a new county park featuring an amphitheater being built on the west shore and water that is cleaner than it has been in 75 years. Allowing a scrap metal company to restart operations on the Roth Steel site is counter to everything this community has worked to accomplish at Onondaga Lake. Please do not let that happen and know that I am ready to assist in any way possible to ensure it does not. Thank you,
