Kevin Smith From: Pat Goldys, Principal Norwood Elementary Re: Family Involvement Bus Program Proposal SUMMARY: The goal of this proposal is to provide an overview of a program to increase academic achievement among Norwoods student population through parental involvement. Traditionally, parent involvement programming has solely been delivered at the school location. This program is designed to deliver more frequent academic support services for parents and students in their neighborhoods. The delivery of services will be accomplished through a bus which will provide workshops for both parents and their children. RATIONALE: Norwood has an enrollment of 532 students in grades PreK through 3 rd grade with 71% FARM students. Since 2004, the percentage of FARM students has increased 22.5% and the current mobility rate is 25%. While Norwood has 82.2% proficiency in reading and 75% proficiency in math for their 3rd grade population, Norwood missed their school progress indicators in 2013. Through the addition of a full time PSC, Norwood has experienced improvements in their parent involvement and ELO programs, however: by providing parental involvement outreach directly to neighborhoods, Norwoods leadership team is confident they will increase parental involvement and empower parents to better support their students academic achievement. With the current parent involvement events, a very small percentage are parents of FARM students. These are the parents that we want and need to involve and engage in their childrens academics. We can go to them instead of insisting they come to us, when they cant due to lack of transportation, large family size, too busy, lack of understanding of how to work with child, discomfort or misunderstandings. We can bring the mountain of learning to our families. PROGRAM: The Family Involvement Bus would be staffed by two to three Norwood Teachers and the Parent Support Coordinator who would travel to neighborhoods within Norwoods catchment area. BCPSs Transportation Department has already confirmed their ability to provide a bus, maintain a bus, and either provide drivers or train teachers who are interested in attaining their CDL at no cost to the program. CDL trained teachers could then both drive and staff the bus. Once at a location, Norwood teachers would work with families to complete a project incorporating reading and math, train parents on Lending Library resources, share aspects of Norwoods curriculum, or gather parent input for the schools P.I.P (Parent Involvement Program), Home School Compact, or School Progress Plan. Both students and parents would be encouraged to participate in Family Involvement Bus visits. COSTS:
Specific cost have not been developed. However, the ongoing cost items would be:
Parental Involvement Supplies Used
Parental Involvement Contract Hourly Salary for Teachers Involved
EXTENSION: The parent involvement bus could be a regional bus shared among Title I schools in the southeastern district.
