1.0 INTRODUCTION

The Big Brain is a Science and Mathematics Partnership program that is organized by
RECTORS. The RECTOR is actually a society that assembles several of Science and
Mathematics course students of Faculty of Education, UiTM Shah Alam. It functions as a
medium to connect all of the Science and Mathematics course students for any events that
relates to Science and Mathematics which are held at any secondary schools around Kuala
Lumpur and Selangor. The RECTORS gives all of the Science and Mathematics course
students opportunity to join the program in rotation. This means each of the member of
Rectors will get at least one chance to participate in any one partnership program at the
secondary schools so that all of the members get the fairly same experience in handling the
program.
Focus of the Big Brain program is actually for those students who are already sat for
Penilaian Tingkatan 3 (PT3). As they are already sat for the examination on October, they
will have lots of leisure time on November. Therefore, the RECTORS aim to fill up their
leisure time with an interesting program which relates their knowledge in Science and
Mathematics. The Big Brain program will consist of three slots. One slot will be held in the
morning which is from 8.30am till 10.00am. The first slot will be filled with ice breaking
with the facilitators and Sudoku challenge. The next two slots will be held from 10.30am till
1.00pm. The second slot will be filled with how to build a bridge while the third slot will be
filled with magic number and explanation session about significant activity by the event
director.
The RECTORS also aims to put the target group into smaller groups with various levels
and achievement. This means they will be done their activities for both slots together with
their small group members. Rectors also aims to put them in groups with various levels and
achievement as the society hopes that the brilliant ones may help their friends which are not
too good in any of the activities. Thus, everyone can help each other and there is no gap
between the target groups. Rectors will act as the facilitators which facilitate the target group
in doing their activities.
2.0 RATIONALE
2 | Page
As the Big Brain program is organized specially for the students who have sat for their
PT3, there are numerous reasons on why the RECTORS choose to organize it for them. First
of all, the RECTORS aim to encourage them to come to school even though their teaching
and learning process in the class is over before PT3. The students are not interested in school
after PT3 because there is no priority that needs them to come to school. Instead, they will
feel useless and bored to present to school after their PT3. Thus, RECTORS aim to conduct
the Big Brain program for them so that the numbers of the target group who come to school
will be increased as they hear an interesting program is going to run especially for them.
Besides, RECTORS targets to help the school administration on zero truancy among the PT3
students.
Other than that, RECTORS also targets to implement them on how easy and fun Science
and Mathematics are. As Science and Mathematics are the high failure subjects in Malaysia,
RECTORS aims to help them to feel happy and confident in facing whatever problems that
are related to both subjects. Thus, RECTORS plans numerous interesting and challenging
activities for them so that they are not felt burden whenever they hear about Science and
Mathematics. Besides, Rectors also wants to help to build their confident level in exploring
Science and Mathematics as they will face Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Additional
Mathematics for Science stream when they are in form 4 and 5. Whenever they feel how easy
and fun the both subjects are, they will feel easy in choosing their course whether they want
to continue studying in Science stream, accounting or other courses in form 4 and 5.
Last but not least, RECTORS target is to encourage the students to higher order thinking
skills. Higher order thinking skills is considered as an important element in educational goals
nowadays. Thus, by conducting the Big Brain program, RECTORS is willing to train the
students to improve their critical and creative thinking. This means RECTORS wants the
students to not study because of getting good grades but study because they willing to
understand theoretically and practically on whatever they do. With the various activities
provided by RECTORS such as Sudoku, how to build a bridge and magic number, the
students will try their best in thinking critically and creatively so that they will be able in
doing their best for their small groups.

For open ended question: If there is a program that will tell you what is thinking skill and
how to think critically, will you join the program and why?
4 | Page
Based on the responds that we gained from the students, most of them did not know
what is critical thinking. The program that will be conducted by us must give them the
exposure about the critical thinking. for question number two, half of them answered that
they like mathematics meanwhile half of them answer no. it means that, our program cannot
focus only on math but at the same time we can conduct a game that will make them love
mathematics. For question number three, most of them answer that work in group is better
than work alone. Thus our program must have activity that needs them to work together as a
group. By doing that, we can make them practice how to work well in group.
For question number four, most of them answer yes. Well there must be question that
required lot of thinking before you come up with the solution. Thus the program that we need
to come up must contain question that not too hard yet not too easy because with that, we can
train them to never give up while solving the problem. For question number five, most of
them answer yes. It is absolutely true because if the activity requires you do work in a group
but you do not have team work, then the activity will not work. For question number six,
most of them answered yes. So in this program we must have the activity that needs them to
invent something but of course they need to use their critical thinking and science concept.
For question number seven, most of them answer no. Thus in our program we will try
to show them various ways to solve one problem. For question number most of them answer
yes, maybe because they cannot find other solution or maybe they are too lazy to think. For
last question, all of them answer no. means that, our program must be able to make them
know what is critical thinking.
For open ended questions, most of them answer yes. All of them are interested to join
the programs that involve critical thinking because some of them are eager to know what is
critical thinking. Some of them responded that the program will give them the benefits and
the other answer that they want to spend their time wisely by joining this activity.
3.2 Philosophy

The goals of Big Brain Program are to challenge the students and to help them to
develop their critical thinking. Other than that, student should be able to work under the
pressure and to ensure they discover that learning science and mathematics is full of
excitement wonder and joy.
3.4 Objective
1. To produce student who can solve problem by using critical thinking
2. To ensure that the student know how to work as a group.
3. To provide students with various ways of solving the problem.

3.7 Methodology
Since the program involves the activities that need the students to work together, thus
we will divide the student into ten groups regardless of their gender and ability. We will pick
the name randomly. One group will consist of ten students. The students then will guide by
the facilitator that had been assigned into every group.
While doing the activities, the students can discuss with the group members and also
with the facilitators. After finishing each activity, the event director will discuss together on
the task given.
The event director will use slide presentation while discussing the task given for the
students. Various video and animation will be show to the students. Since nowadays students
learn better when they learn visually, thus we think this method will help them to more
interest.
3.8 Evaluation
An evaluation form will be distributed to all students at the end of the program.
Student has to answer it according to what they feel throughout the program. From the form,,
it can be seen whether the program has succeed in reaching its objectives or not.
It can also be seen that whether the program is suitable to overcome the problem or
not. If it is, the same program can be held in the future. We can see the flaw of the program
from student opinion, and fix it for the next program.
