Thisunitwillengagestudentsintwobigideasinthefinearts:HowtheArtsare
OrganizedandHowtheArtsCommunicate.ThisunitbeginsbylookingcloselyatartbyVincent
VanGoghanddiscoveringhisstyleofcreatingtextureinlandscapes.Observingtheworkof
VincentVanGoghwillhelpstudentsbegintoseehowheusedbrushstroketorecordhis
impressionoflight,colorandtexture.Studentswillhopefullybegintoseeourlocallandscapein
anewwayandfocusonthechangingeffectsoflightandcolorandhowtheyworktogetherto
createtextureinthelandscape.TheseconceptsaretheessenceofImpressionismandVanGogh
wasaleaderinthisartmovement.
Throughtheexperiencesinthisunit,Ihopethatourstudentswillexploretheessential
question,HowCanICreateTextureinLandscapes?Wewilltakepartininquirylearning
throughactivitieswherebythestudentswillcreatetexturedartthroughinventedstrategies.I
wouldlikethestudentstogainanessentialunderstandingbyobservingotherartistswork,
discoveringthroughindividualobservation,andreflectionthatcolorandtextureinnatureis
everchangingandiseffectedbysunlightandwater.Ialsowantthemtounderstandthatthereis
nolimittothevarietyofstrategiesforusingmediasuchasoilpastelstocreatetextureinart.We
willuncoversomeofthestrategiesduringourthreeartproductionexperienceswithother
learningactivities.
Wewillbeginourunitplanbydoinganenergizeractivitytoawakenthesensesand

community.Theywilleachcreateanoriginalflowerusingsomeoftheimpressioniststrategies.
Uponcompletion,studentswillarrangetheirflowerstocreateaclassartpieceinspiredby
VincentVanGoghsSunflowerpaintings.
Finally,studentswilllistentoastoryaboutVincentVanGogh.Then,theywilluseoil
pasteltocreatetheirownoriginalinterpretationofStarryNightusingtheirnewskillsofusing
oilpastelstocreatecolorandtexture.Studentswillwriteanartiststatementwithareflection.
StudentswillbepromptedwiththoughtprovokingquestionsrelatedtoImpressionism,changing
elementsinnature,andobservingtextureinnature.Studentswillposttheirartondisplayinthe
classroomandwillparticipateinagallerywalk.

whichwillbeprovidedtothempriortobeginningthefinalartpiece.Studentswillthendoaself
evaluationtoshowthattheyrecognizetheelementsofartanddesignintheirownwork.Intheir
reflection,studentswillsharetheartprocesstheyengagedin,theirideas,values,andexperiences
relatedtotheirfinishedartwork.
Iplanondoingthislessonthe2ndweekinJulywithmychildrenandtheirfriends.They
arebetweentheagesofsixandthirteen.Thiswillprovidemeagoodbaselineoftheabilitiesof
studentsinthisagerange.Iwouldalsoliketoinviteadultstotakepartinthislessonforthemto
becomeawareofthepowerofcommunicatingthroughthearts.
Thisunitplanisdesignedforstudentsbetweengradesthreetofivetoestablishan
understandingofideasrelatedtoImpressionismthroughstudyingVincentVanGoghsart.

StarryNight.LivinginHawaii,thestudentsmayhavehadmanyexperienceswith
