apples.Afterseveralmorebiteshavebeentakenandyouareleftwithanapplecore
anditbelongstothesetofapplecores.Atwhatpointdidtheapplecrossoverfrom
beinganappletobeinganapplecore?Whatifyoucouldgetonemorebiteoutof
thatapplecore,doesthatmoveitintoadifferentset?

Thedefenitionoftheappleandapplecoresetsaretoostrictlydefinedwhen
lookingattheprocessofeatinganapple.Theareabetweenthetwosetsisnot
clearlydefinedsincetheobjectcannotbelongtothesetofapplesandapplecores
because,bydefinition,anapplecoreisNOTanapple.Thesetsdefiningapplesand
applecoresneedtoberedefinedasfuzzysets.
Afuzzysetallowsforitsmemberstohavedegreesofmembership.Ifthevalue
of1isassignedtoobjectsentirelywithinthesetanda0isassignedtoobjects
outsideoftheset,thenanyobjectpartiallyinthesetwillhaveavaluebetween0
and1.Thenumberassignedtotheobjectiscalleditsdegreeofmembershipinthe
set.Soanapplewithonebiteoutofitmayhaveadegreeofmembershipof0.9in
thesetofapples.Thisdoesnotmeanthatithastohaveadegreeofmembershipof
0.1inthesetofapplecoresthough.Howeverastheappleiseatenitloosesits
membershipinthefuzzysetofapplesandgainsmembershipinthefuzzysetof
