Course Description
Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) is a high school level course for students interested in design and
engineering. The major focus of the IED course is to expose students to design process, research and analysis,
teamwork, communication methods, global and human impacts, engineering standards, and technical
documentation. IED gives students the opportunity to develop skills and understanding of course concepts
through activity-, project-, and problem-based (APPB) learning. Used in combination with a teaming approach,
APPB-learning challenges students to continually hone their interpersonal skills, creative abilities and
understanding of the design process. It also allows students to develop strategies to enable and direct their
own learning, which is the ultimate goal of education.
The course assumes no previous knowledge, but students should be concurrently enrolled in college
preparatory mathematics and science. Students will employ engineering and scientific concepts in the solution
of engineering design problems. In addition, students use a state of the art 3D solid modeling design software
package to help them design solutions to solve proposed problems. Students will develop problem-solving
skills and apply their knowledge of research and design to create solutions to various challenges that increase
in difficulty throughout the course. Students will also learn how to document their work, and communicate
their solutions to their peers and members of the professional community.
Introduction to Engineering Design is one of three foundation courses in the Project Lead The Way high
school pre-engineering program. The course applies and concurrently develops secondary level knowledge
and skills in mathematics, science, and technology

Class Requirements
All students will be required to provide the following before participating in the class.
Engineering Notebook (provided) must be ready and out at the beginning of every class period.
3-ring binder (provided) must be organized with the handouts given in the order I give them.
*Both the notebook and binder can be stored in the classroom

Classroom Expectations

Respect
a.

Prepared and Punctual

b.

Be courteous of your classmates. If you are a distraction to the class you will have one verbal warning. The second
offense will be dealt with during work time or after class. Third offense you will be sent to the office.

Have all necessary materials including your 3-ring binder, pencil, and engineer notebook. Students will not be
allowed to leave the classroom without their assignment notebook. Be in the classroom on time. On time is in the
classroom by your seat when the bell rings.

Attendance
c.

Excused Absence: You must turn in assignments you have completed on the day you return and ask for the missed
assignments, which should be turned in the following day. If you missed a quiz, you must take it the following day
during advisory or before or after school. If you are absent for an extended period of time, I will meet with you
and we will determine a schedule for make-up work.

d.

Scheduled school field trips: You must hand in assignments due that day, get the assignment for the next day and
be prepared for class on the day following your absence.

e.

If you know you will be absent for an extended period of time, notify the office, and present the absence form to
me. Have all assignments and be prepared to resume class upon your return.
