THE ACCOUNT OF
CREATION
From Genesis 1
made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the
waters that were above the expanse. And it
was so. And God called the expanse Heaven.
And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
And God said, Let the waters under the
heavens be gathered together into one place,
and let the dry land appear. And it was so.
God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called
Seas. And God saw that it was good.
And God said, Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees
bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth. And it
was so. The earth brought forth vegetation,
plants yielding seed according to their own
kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is
their seed, each according to its kind. And
God saw that it was good. And there was
evening and there was morning, the third
day.
And God said, Let there be lights in the
expanse of the heavens to separate the day
from the night. And let them be for signs
and for seasons, and for days and years, and
let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth. And it was
so. And God made the two great lightsthe
greater light to rule the day and the lesser
light to rule the nightand the stars. And
God set them in the expanse of the heavens
to give light on the earth, to rule over the
day and over the night, and to separate the
light from the darkness. And God saw that
it was good. And there was evening and
there was morning, the fourth day.

LIVING IN HOPE
From Genesis 78
Everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. [God] blotted out every living thing that was on the
face of the ground. ... They were blotted out
from the earth. Only Noah was left, and
those who were with him in the ark. And
the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days.
But God remembered Noah and all the
beasts and all the livestock that were with
him in the ark. And God made a wind blow
over the earth, and the waters subsided.

understand one anothers speech. So the
Lord dispersed them from there over the
face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore its name was called
Babel, because there the Lord confused the
language of all the earth.

The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. ... Then the men said to Lot, Have you
anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city, bring
them out of the place. For we are about
to destroy this place, because the outcry
against its people has become great before
the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it. So Lot went out and said to his
sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, Up! Get out of this place, for the Lord
is about to destroy the city. But he seemed
to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
As morning dawned, the angels urged
Lot, saying, Up! Take your wife and your
two daughters who are here, lest you be
swept away in the punishment of the
city. But he lingered. So the men
seized him and his wife and
01.pp.001-105.indd 37
his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him
out and set him outside the city. And as
they brought them out, one said, Escape for
your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere
in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be
swept away. ... Then the Lord rained on
Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from
the Lord out of heaven. And he overthrew
those cities. ... But Lots wife, behind him,
looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before
the Lord. And he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land
of the valley, and he looked and, behold, the
smoke of the land went up like the smoke
of a furnace.
So it was that, when God destroyed the
cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the
midst of the overthrow
when he overthrew
the cities in
which Lot
had lived.

Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him,
and Esau said to himself, The days of
mourning for my father are approaching;
then I will kill my brother Jacob. But the
words of Esau her older son were told to
Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her
younger son and said to him, Behold, your
brother Esau comforts himself about you by
planning to kill you. Now therefore, my son,
obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haran and stay with him a while, until
your brothers fury turns awayuntil your
brothers anger turns away from you, and
he forgets what you have done to him. Then
I will send and bring you from there. Why
should I be bereft of you both in one day?
Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. And he came to a certain place and
stayed there that night, because the sun had
set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he
put it under his head and lay down in that
place to sleep. And he dreamed, and behold,
there was a ladder set up on the earth, and
the top of it reached to heaven. And behold,
the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! And behold, the Lord stood
above it and said, I am the Lord, the God
of Abraham your father and the God of
Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give
to you and to your offspring. Your offspring
shall be like the dust of the earth, and you
shall spread abroad to the west and to the
east and to the north and to the south, and

Jacob lived in the land of his fathers sojournings, in the land of Canaan.
These are the generations of Jacob.
Joseph, being seventeen years old,

JOSEPHS DREAMS

REVENGE ON JOSEPH
From Genesis 37
Now his brothers went to pasture their fathers flock near Shechem. And Israel said
to Joseph, Are not your brothers pasturing
the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you
to them. And he said to him, Here I am.
So he said to him, Go now, see if it is well
with your brothers and with the flock, and
bring me word. So he sent him from the
Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
And a man found him wandering in the
fields. And the man asked him, What are
you seeking? I am seeking my brothers,
he said. Tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock. And the man said, They
have gone away, for I heard them say, Let us
go to Dothan. So Joseph went after his
brothers and found them at Dothan.
They saw him from afar, and before he
came near to them they conspired against
him to kill him. They said to one another, Here comes this dreamer. Come now, let
us kill him and throw him into one of the
pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal
has devoured him, and we will see what will
become of his dreams. But when Reuben
heard it, he rescued him out of their hands,
saying, Let us not take his life. And Reuben said to them, Shed no blood; throw
him into this pit here in the wilderness, but
do not lay a hand on himthat he might
rescue him out of their hand to restore him
to his father. So when Joseph came to his
brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the
robe of many colors that he wore. And they
took him and threw him into a pit. The pit
was empty; there was no water in it.

JOSEPHS BROTHERS GO
TO EGYPT
From Genesis 4142
Moreover, all the earth came to Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was
severe over all the earth.
When Jacob learned that there was grain
for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons, Why
do you look at one another? And he said,
Behold, I have heard that there is grain for
sale in Egypt. Go down and buy grain for
us there, that we may live and not die. So
ten of Josephs brothers went down to buy
grain in Egypt. But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Josephs brother, with his brothers,
for he feared that harm might happen to
him.

you, go up in peace to your father.
Then Judah went up to him and said, ...
When we went back to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. And
when our father said, Go again, buy us a
little food, we said, We cannot go down.
If our youngest brother goes with us, then
we will go down. For we cannot see the

with us. Then your servant my father said
to us, You know that my wife bore me two
sons. One left me, and I said, Surely he has

Now a man from the house of Levi went
and took as his wife a Levite woman. The
woman conceived and bore a son, and when
she saw that he was a fine child, she hid
him three months. When she could hide
him no longer, she took for him a basket
made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and
placed it among the reeds by the river bank.
And his sister stood at a distance to know
what would be done to him.
