Exercise 4.

9. The perimeter of a right section of a prism is 30 cm and the lateral area is 360
cm2 what is the length of the lateral edge?
Since
lateral area=perimeter*lateral edge then
lateral edge=lateral area/perimeter
360/30=12
lateral edge=12 cm.

Exercise 4.4
13. What is the volume of the water inside the cylindrical
A cylindrical vessel of height 10 feet has an outside diameter of 6 ft and a wall
thickness of 0.5 inch. What is the volume of the water inside the cylindrical tank?
the volume of water = r^2h where r is the inside radiusand h is the height
r = (6ft - 1 inch)/2 = (72 inches - 1)/2 inches = 71/2 inches
height = 10 ft = 120 inches
V = *^71/2)^2 * 120 = 475103 cubic inches
= 475103/ 12^3 cft
= 275 cft.
volume of cylinder = rh
r = inner radius
out side diameter = 6 ft = 72 inch
outer radius = 3 ft. = 36 inch
inner radius = outer radius thickness
= 36 0.5 = 35.5 inch = 35.5/12 ft.
volume = 3.14 (35.5/12) 10 = 274.80 cubic ft.

Here are some of the questions that I'm confused on how to solve. Any help is greatly appreciated
.
1.) An edge of a hallow iron cube measures 10cm. The cube has a uniform wall thinckness of 2.5 cm and
a square hole at the top. Find the mass of the cube in kilograms if the density of iron is 7.9x10g/cm^3.
- I may also need some help on how to draw this because we are required to draw the figure. I do have a
drawing but im not sure if its correct.
2.) A cylindrical tank of height equal to twice the diameter of the base can hold 10 liters (1L=1000cm^3) of
water. Another cylindrical container with the same capacity has its height equal to three times the
diameter of its base. Find the ratio of the amount of aluminum required for making the two containers,
including covers.
3.) What dimensions of a tin can of volume 54 cm^3 should be produced if the required height is equal
to the diameter of its base.
4.) A cylindrical tank has a lateral surface area of 8 cm^2 and a volume of 176 cm^3. Find the base
area.
5.) A cylindrical oiler can contain 848g of machine oil. The height of the oiler is 12cm. Find the radius of
the oiler if the density of oil is equal to 900kg/m^3
6.) A chemical plant requires a water supply of 12m^3/hr. Suppose the rate of flow in the water pipe is
2m/sec. Find the radius of the pipe to be used in centimeters.
3.) What dimensions of a tin can of volume 54 cm^3 should be produced if the required height is equal
to the diameter of its base.
Volume of a cylinder = r^2 h
h=d
r = d/2
substitute and solve...
54 = (d/2)^2 * d = (d^3)/4
d^3 = 216
d=6
the radius of the can is 3 cm
the height of the can is 6 cm

for #6:
(12 m^3/hr) (1 hr/3600s.) ((100 cm.)^3/1m^3) = 3333 1/3 cm^3/s.
3333 1/3 cm^3/s. = () (r)^2 (h)
where h = 2 m/s => convert this to cm/s so that the cm^3 would cancel 1 out and become cm^2.
3333 1/3 cm^3/s / 100(2) cm/s. = r^2
5.30516477 = r^2
r = 2.3 cm.
the one who answered this first was correct halfway except for the cancellation of units.

1) To find mass of the cube first find volume of cube material

edge of cube = 10 cm
edge of inner cube (hollow space) = 10 - (2.5+2.5) = 5 cm
total volume of cube = 10^3 = 1000
total volume empty space = 5^3 = 125
Volume of cube material = 1000 - 125 = 875 cm^3
Mass of cube = density x volume = 7.9x10 x 875 = 69125 g
= 69.125 kg
See this link for Diagram of cube http://i46.tinypic.com/2zdy8eq.jpg
2)
For first cylinder, h = 2d and volume,
*(d/2)h = 10000..........put h = 2d and find d
For first cylinder, h = 3d and volume = 10000........calculate d as before.
4)
lateral surface area of cylindrical = 2rh = 8
rh = 4
h = r/4
volume = rh = 176
rh = 176
r(r/4) = 176

r = 704
r = 8.89
Base Area = r = (8.89) = 248.28 cm^2
5.)
Density = mass / volume
volume = mass / Density = 0.848 / 9000
= 9.42x 10-4 m^3
= 942.22 cm^3
volume = rh
r(12) = 942.22...............h=12 cm
r = 942.22 / 12
r = 24.993
r = 4.999 = 5 cm.......answer
