Course Description:
Description
This course is designed for university students who have Basic English skills and
wish to expand their vocabulary and increase fluency. The course will help students
engage in fuller conversations about informal topics such as daily activities, interests,
and personal preferences. The overall objectives of this course are to build skills in the
areas of speaking, listening, reading, writing, and vocabulary, and to practice essential
grammar and pronunciation points. Upon successful completion of this course, the
students will have acquired all the necessary skills for Pre-Intermediate to
Intermediate English Proficiency.

Course Requirements:
Attendance

(15%)

Attendance will be checked at the beginning of each

class. You are expected to stay throughout the two-hour
period. Students are required to have at least 75%
attendance to pass the course. Students who are more
than 10 minutes late will be counted as absent for that
class period.

Midterm Exam (25%)

The midterm exam will be a written and oral test

based on fundamental knowledge from class lectures, to
be administered on the 8th week of the semester.

Final Exam (30%)

The final exam grade will also be based on a written

and oral test. You will be asked to demonstrate many
of the essential components that you have learned
during the semester.

Class Participation (30%) Class participation includes quizzes, homework,

participating actively in discussions, and performing
communicative tasks.

Grading:
The following grading scale will be used in determining grades.
A+ = 95-100%

C+ = 75-80%

A= 91-94%
B+ = 85-90%

C = 71-74%
D+ = 65-70%

B = 81-84%

D = 61-64%
F = 60 and below

Concerning the Attendance Policy:

Arriving more than 10 minutes late will count as an absence for that hour. This will
result in the loss of the attendance credit for that hour. You can still get credit for
attendance if you are sick. To get the credit, you must supply a note from the hospital
showing your name and date. If you are absent because of a school function, you
must show me a note signed by one of your professors. Please show this to me on the
week following the absence.
