Project: Assemblage Art

In this particular lesson plan, students will look closely at the work of Louise Nevelson, known for her abstract sculptures
made from cast-off pieces of wood actual street throwaways uniformly coated with black or white spray paint. Students

will create their own assemblages from wood pieces and other cast-off objects on a panel.

This project explores abstract art in the form of assemblage. What do you know already
about this type of art? Whose artwork will inspire you in creating this next piece?
Suggested items: cast-off objects, such as buttons, machine parts, wire, toy parts, recycled plastic
pieces, old jewelry, foam board or heavy cardboard scraps, small boxes, lids and so on.

Today you will begin by planning your design of your assemblage sculpture. This is
called a rough draft or thumbnail sketch. Refer back to your theme as a guide in directing you
with what to make.
Directions: Start a new page in your sketchbook titled: Assemblage Project followed by a new
page titled: Vocabulary. Then come up with an idea of something that inspires you as a theme
for your art project today. To do this, you needed to identify the idea, answer the 5 Ws to help
you narrow down the idea into a theme. This theme will be the purpose of your artwork. You will
come back to this information frequently while creating your painting.

Who (artist) is inspiring you for this project? Is there a common subject matter
used with making clay sculptures? Explain.
What kind of artwork does this artist create? Which artwork interests me in this
style?
Where (resources) did you find examples of the artwork and information about
the artist?
When you look at the artists work, how is this inspiring you to create your art?
What do you like about clay sculptures? What do you not like?
Why are you going to make the artwork you chose?
o

The projects guiding questions:

What function will your artwork have? What will be incorporated to support
your theme?
Which elements and principles will you use to communicate this idea?
Where will you show emphasis (your focal point, what you want everyone to
see first)?
How much space will you use? What space is important with more details
(positive) and which space is less important with little details (negative)?

In your Write About It section of your sketchbook, draw a couple ideas of what you would like your group to create. Have
a purpose: what will this piece be about? What mood or feeling will it possess? What kind of movement will the view
have as their eyes travel from one piece to the next of your assemblage?
