SpecialagentsoftheFederalBureauofInvestigation(FBI)haveacareerofexcitement
andhelpfulservicethatofferstheabilitytohelptheUnitedStateswhiletakingdownhighly
dangerouscriminals.Sincethe1930stheFBIhashelpedcatchcriminalsalloverAmerica.This
careerplaysavitalroleinallofAmericansocietybyprotectingthepeopleoftheUnitedStates
againsttheonslaughtofcriminalsattemptingtoharmthem.EventhoughtheFBIusesmoreand
moretechnologyastimegoesonthehumanfactorcannevergettakenoutcompletely.The
Bureauconstantlyneedsnewagentsbecausetheyneedpeopletoexaminecrimescenes,find
evidence,andinterrogatesuspects.Thiscareerhelpscitizensallacrossthecountrystaysafeby
takingcriminals,fromgangsterstowhitecollarembezzlers,offthestreets.
.AttorneyGeneralCharlesBonaparteformedtheFederalBureauofInvestigationin1908
assigningStanleyFinchasthefirsteverdirectoroftheFBI(Hamilton).Inthebeginningthe
Bureauinvestigatedcrimesthathadfederalrelationssuchasnaturalizationcrimes,orantitrust
investigations(ABriefHistory).TheFBIacquiredcredibilityandrespectonceJ.EdgarHoover
tookoverasdirectorin1924.WhenHoovertookcommandhemadetheFBIareputable
department.Duringthe1930skidnappingandgangstersplaguedthenation.Bybreakingthe
mostfamouskidnappingcaseofthetime,theLindberghkidnapping,andbytakingdownmajor
gangsterssuchasJohnDillinger,BabyFaceNelson,andGeorgeMachineGunKelly,

HooverandtheFBIcutdownoncrimeconsiderably.AftertheUnitedStatesjoinedWorldWar
IItheFBIturneditsattentiontoNazispiesand
successfullytookdown

).AfterWorldWarIIended,stoppingCommunismfrom
enteringtheUSAandhuntingSovietspiesbecametheFBIsmainfocuspointforthedurationof
theColdWar.TheAtomSpyRingbecamethemostfamousColdWarspycase.Inthiscase
JuliusandEthelRosenbergstoletheplanstomakeanatombombfromtheUnitedStatesand
soldthemtotheSoviets(

).AroundthistimeHooverbegantolosesomesupport
ofthepublicduetoreportsoftheBureausspyingonimportantpeopleinAmericasuchas
congressmenandcivilrightsleaders(

).Asaresultofthese
rumors,manyconspiraciesstartedtoappearabouttheFBIassassinatingmanyprominentfigures
inAmericansocietyincludingMartinLutherKingJr.andPresidentJohnF.Kennedy.Duringthe
1980s,thedrugcartelsholdonAmericabecamesoextremethatcrushingthemgotaddedtothe
listofmajorfocusesoftheFBI.Laterinthe1990swhentheinternetbecamecommonplacein
theAmericanhousehold,theBureauputmeasuresinplacetoensurecitizensandthegovernment
stayedprotectedfromcyberthreatsbycreatingtheComputerAnalysisandResponseTeam
(CART).OnSeptember4th,2001,thecurrentDirectoroftheFBIRobertS.Muellergotsworn
in(ABriefHistory).Onlyaweeklater,theSeptember11thattackshappened,shiftingtheFBIs
focustocounterterrorismandpreventingattacksofthatscalefromoccurring.
InordertokeeptheBureaudiverse,theFBIdoesnotrequireaspecificdegreetoapply.
TheFBIwillconsiderapersonwithanycollegedegreefromanyqualifiedcollegeoruniversity
withintheUSA.However,somedegreesrelatetothecareerbetterthanothersandthatcouldset
apersonapartfromtheircompetitors.Forexample,someonewithalaworcriminaljustice

degreecanexpectabetterchanceatgettingajobthansomeonewithalessrelevantdegree.The
requirementsforconsiderationfortheFBItrainingacademyincludepossessingUnitedStates
citizenship,anageof23to36yearsold,havingatleastabachelor'sdegreefromanyaccredited
collegeoruniversityintheUSA,havingatleastthreeyearsoffulltimeworkexperience,and
havinglivedwithintheUSAforthelastfive

years.Someonewouldbecomeautomatically
disqualifiedfromtheselectioniftheyhaveevercommittedafelony,hadajuryconvictthemofa
violentcrime,triedtooverthrowtheUnitedStatesgovernment,failedtopaychildsupport,
failedadrugtest,failedtofiletaxreturns(CareerEligibility).Theserequirementsensurethat
onlythebestthattheUnitedStatesofAmericahastooffercanbecomespecialagents.
OncesomeonefinishestheapplicationprocessandtheBureauacceptsthem,theywill
starttraininginQuantico,Virginia,for20weeksinordertobecomeafullagent(Linkins).The
FBIacademybecameoneofHoover'sfirstandfinestadditionstotheBureauin1928(ABrief
History).Atthetrainingacademynewtraineeslearnethics,firearmtraining,law,andFBI
procedures.Whiletheretheywillalsotrainvigorouslybothphysicallyandmentallytoprepare
fortheirnewcareer.ThetraineesmustalsopracticereallifescenariosintheFBImadetownof
HogansAlley.Themocktowncompletelymimicsarealtownincludingacourt,acar
dealershipandothercommonplaceestablishmentsacommunitywouldhave.TheBureauhires
actorstoactasfakecriminalsandterroristssothattheycantestpotentialagentsthroughmultiple
andvaryingreallifescenarios.TheFBIinvestigatesawiderangeofcrimesfromwhitecollarto
terrorism,soHogansAlleyconstantlyhasdifferenttypesofcrimesrunthroughit.Ifatraining
agentcompletesthecoursetheymaygraduateandbegintheircareerwithintheFBI.

Onceanewspecialagentcompletesthetrainingtheywillheadouttotheirassignedfield
officeandchooseadepartment.ThedepartmentsoftheFBIallinvestigatedifferenttypesof
crimerangingfromwhitecollar,toorganizedcrime,toterrorism.TheFBIdoesnothavemuch
roomforadvancement,butallowsforachangeofscenerywith56differentfieldlocationsto
choosefromacrossAmericaandPuertoRico(Hamilton).Allofthedepartmentsdifferfromone
anotherandthekindofagentthattheyneedalsodiffers.Forexample,violentcrimesmightneed
someonewhocouldchaseandthentalkasuspectintosurrendering,whileontheotherhand,in
thewhitecollardepartmenttheymightneedsomeonewhocandocomplicatedcalculationsand
focusoneventhemostminutedetail.ThestartingsalarydependsonwheretheFBIstationsthe

).ThesebenefitsensurethatthebraveagentsoftheBureaureceiverewardsfortheir
hardwork.
TheFBIinvestigatesaplethoraofcrimes,withwhitecollarcrimestypicallyinvolving
theleastviolence.Thesecrimesincludeanytypeoffraudorcorporatetrickery.Thisterm,
coinedin1939,hasreferredtocrimesinvolvingmoneyandcorporatefraudeversince.Themost
famousofthesecases,namedtheEnroncase,happenedin2002.Enron,acompanybasedin
Californiathatatonepointmade150billiondollarsayear,suddenlywentbankruptwhichleft
thousandsofworkerswithouthealthinsuranceorretirements.TheFBIconcludedthatsomething
seemedoffabouthowEnroncollapsed,sotheysenttwoagentstoinvestigate,butsoontheysent
upto45handselectedagentstothecorporateofficeandretrievedover500boxesofevidence
thattheownersofthecompanyhadcommittedmajorfraud(TheEnronCase).TheWhiteCollar

divisionalsoworksoncasesinvolvingthetheftofartandjewelry.TheBureausWhiteCollar
divisionworkstirelesslytostopbothcorporationsandindividualsfromdestroyingthefinancial
gainsofUnitedStatescitizens.
Organizedcrimegetsdefinedascrimecommittedbyanytypeofcrimesyndicatesuchas
theItalianorSicilianmob.Organizedcrimesyndicatesgetsplitupintothreedivisions:the
Italianmob,EurasianandMiddleEasterngroups,andAsianAfricangroups(OrganizedCrime
Overview).Themostpopularmethodoftakingdownthecrimegroupsinvolvesinfiltratingthe
gangwithanagentundercoverandlettingthemcollectevidenceonthemembersofthespecific
mobunderinvestigation.Oncetheundercoveragentcollectsenoughevidence,theymakethe
arrestandhopefullythecriminalspayfortheircrimes.AtonepointtheFBItookdownoneof
theworldsmostnotoriousmobsters,AlCapone.CaponeranamobinChicagointhe1920sand
30s.Hehadcontrolofeverythingfromprostitutiontogambling(AlCaponeFiles).Caponehad
doneaverygoodjobofprotectinghimselffromthepolice,butoncethelocalpoliceandtheFBI
joinedintheireffortstocatchCaponeitbecamemucheasier.Mr.Caponemadeasmallmistake
thatturnedouttobecameveryfortunatefortheauthoritieswhenheforgottofilehisincometax
(AlCaponeFiles).Oncehemadethatmistaketheauthoritiesfoundachinkinhisarmorandtook
himdown.OncearrestedCaponethejurysentencedhimtoAlcatrazforelevenyears.When
AuthoritiesreleasedhimhissicknessandoldagecaughtupwithhimandforcedMr.Caponeto
retirefromhislifeofcrime(AlCaponeFiles).WiththeremovalofMr.Caponetheeraofthe
mobstersstartedtodecline.
Ifanindividualinsteadofanorganizationcommitsaviolentcrime,thentheviolent
crimesdivisionhandlesthecase.Crimesinthiscategoryincludemurder,kidnapping,violence,

andmajortheftssuchasartorjewelrytheft.Violentcrimeagentsmustfocusonveryminor
detailsandhavetheabilitytomakeconnectionsbetweenevidence.Eventhoughthecrimerateof
theUnitedStateshasdroppedsixpercentfrom2009to2010,theviolentcrimesunitstillhas
muchtodo(FBICrimeStatistics).Theviolentcrimesdivisionalsoinvestigatescrimesinvolving
serialmurderers.TheFBIassistedinthearrestofmanymajorserialkillerssuchasTedBundy,
JeffreyDahmer,andWayneWilliams.AftertheBureaumakesanarresttheyusethecaseto
attempttoachieveanunderstandingofhowtopreventsomeoneelsefromcommittingthese
heinouscrimes.CrimesviolatingcivilrightsandhatecrimesgetinvestigatedbytheFBIaswell.
TheFBIinvestigatedmanyofhistory'smostfamoushatecrimessuchasthemurdersofAndrew
Goodman,JamesChancy,andMichaelSchwernerfreedombusridersmurderedfortryingto
helpAfricanAmericansequalrights.Civilrightscasesgetsplitupintofourdifferentcategories:
hatecrimes,coloroflawviolations,humantrafficking,andFreedomofAccesstoClinic
Entrances(FACE)Actviolations(
CivilRightsProgramOverview
)
.Hatecrimesincludeany
crimewherethemotivebehindthecrimeconsistofhateforthevictimsgender,race,sexual
orientation,ordisability.Thesecrimeslayatthetopoftheprioritiesforcivilrightscrime
investigatorsbecauseofthedeeplytraumaticmentalimpactthesecrimescanhaveontheir
victims.Coloroflawviolationsinvolveanypersonofauthoritymisusingsaidauthorityto
commitahatebasedcrime.Theseviolationsmakeup43percentofcivilrightcases(CivilRights
ProgramOverview).Humantraffickingranksasthethirdlargestcrimeintheworldmakingita
highprioritycrime.Lastly,theleastcommonofthesecrimes,FACEcrimes,dealwithanyone
attemptingtothreatenorhurtthoseinthereproductivehealthcareservicesortheirpatients.
ViolentcrimeshavealwaysplaguedtheUnitedStates.TheFBIhas,sinceitsconception,fought

theonslaughtofviolentcrimesandhassucceededconsideringthatcrimecurrentlyrestsatits
lowestpointinUShistory
ThetoppriorityoftheFBIconsistsofprotectingtheUSagainstterroristattacks.They
accomplishthisgoalwiththeTerrorismTaskForce.TheFBIwatchesforattacksrangingfrom
bombs,tomassshootings,toanthrax.ThemostfamousterroristattackonUSsoilhappenedon
September11th,2001,whentwoplanesflewintothetwintowerinNewYorkCity.Thisevent
drasticallychangedhowtheFBIworksbybecomingmorelikehomelanddefensealongsidethe
criminalinvestigationpartoftheFBI.TheFBIworkedtirelesslyonfindingtheculprits
responsibleforthe9/11attacks.After9/11,findingterroristsbecameamajorjobfortheFBI.
Anotherextremelyfamouscasehappenedin2001calledtheanthraxmailcase.Agents
investigatedforeightyearsbeforetheymadeanimportantdiscoveryandfoundaplausible
suspect.Theyhadhundredsofspecialagentsworkingonthecasetofindoutwhoharmed
Americansintheirownhomes.Themainsuspecttookhisownlifeaftertheauthoritiesbrought
upchargesagainsthimandsincethentheauthoritieshavegivenhimresponsibilityforthecrime.
ManyUnitedStatescitizensliveinconstantfearofterroristattacksandtheFBIdoesnotplanto
restuntilthethreatofterrorismbecomesadistantmemory
TheFBIholdsthejobofprotectingthenation'ssecretsandweaponsofmassdestruction.
Theyoftenhavetoprotectbothofthesefromforeignspies.Thecounterintelligenceunithasfour
maingoals:keepingweaponsofmassdestructionandothersuchtechnologiesoutofthewrong
hands,protectingthesecretsoftheAmericanintelligencecommunity,protectingthenation's
criticalassets,andcounteringtheactivitiesofforeignspies.Theydothisbyusingtheinternetto
collectinformation,keepingtabsonsuspectedspies,andusingspiesoftheirown.Probablythe

mostfamousspieseverarrestedbytheFBIbecameknownastheAtomSpyRing.The
Rosenbergs,thecoupleheldresponsibleformostofthecrimes,spiedfortheSovietsandsoldthe
USSRthesecretstotheatomicbombduringthe1950s.TheFBIarrestedthemfoundthecouple
guiltyinatrialbyjury.Thejurysentencedthemtoexecution(
AtomSpyCase
).Thecases
popularitysparkedbecauseoftheconstantdisputeoverwhethertheRosenbergsreally
committedthecrimeorjustbecamescapegoatsoftheUnitedStatesCommunistwitchhunt.Ever
sinceWorldWarIItheFBIhasprotectedAmericansecretsandlivesandtheycontinuetodoso
despitethegrowingdifficultiesprovidedbytheinternet.
Recently,defendingourcyberspacefromhackersandterroristsalikehasbecomeatop
prioritywithintheBureau.TheFBIachievesthisgoalbyrecruitingthebestcodersandcomputer
hackersavailabletothemtokeeptheUnitedStatessecretssecureandprotectcitizensfrom
cyberattacksandscams.TheyhavealsocreatedajointtaskforcewiththeDepartmentof
DefensesCyberCrimeCenterandnineteenotherintelligenceagenciestocreatetheNational
CyberInvestigativeJointTaskForce(NCIJTF).TheNCIJTFInvestigatecrimessuchaschild
pornographyrings,spies,andcyberterrorists(Overviewof
theNCIJTF
).Eventhoughcyber
crimeshappenoncomputerstheBureaustillusesphysicalsurveillancetechniquestocatchmany
criminals,becauseasFBIDirectorRobertS.Muellersaid,
Behindeveryintrusionisaperson
responsibleforthatintrusion,meaningthatthesecybercriminalsactnodifferentlyfromany
othercriminalandcangetthemselvesarrestedandpunishedthroughtheexpertinvestigative
skillsoftheFBI.TheBureaustillholdsstrongevenastheworldmovesfurtherintothedigital
ageuncoveringnewtypesofcrimesforcriminalstocommit.TheFBIwillcontinuetoevolveto
matchcybercriminalsandthethreatsthattheysupplycyberspacewith.

TheBureausupportsresearchintotheinnerworkingsofacriminal'smindandreasoning.
The
BehavioralResearchandInstructionUnit(BRIU)conductsallresearchrelatedtothose
topicsfortheBureau.TheBRIU,establishedinQuantico,Virginia,in1972,strivesforthegoal
ofunderstandingcriminalsbetterinordertomakeinvestigationingthemmoreefficient
(Overviewof
theBRIU
).TheBRIUsranksconsistofsupervisoryspecialagents,veteranpolice
officers,psychologists,criminologists,andcrimeanalysisexperts.Withthisdiversegroupof
professionalsresearchingandtrainingwithintheFBI,theBureaucankeepitsagentupdatedon
thenewestdataaboutcriminalpsychology.OneoftheBRIUsmainjobsinvolvesinstructing
newagentsduringtrainingattheacademy(

).Theyinstructtraineeson
criminalpsychology,sociology,andhowtoapplythesetopicsintoinvestigations.The
BehavioralResearchandInstructionUnitalsoservestoresearchcriminalpsychologyand
sociologyinordertocontinuetoexpandonthefieldandprovideagentswiththebest
informationavailabletothem.OneimportantbreakthroughtheBRIUmadewouldbecome
knownastheprocessofcriminalprofiling.Acriminalprofilersjobconsistsofexplainingthe
criminalsmotiveandnarrowingthelistofsuspectsbasedonhowthecrimescenedepictsthe
criminalsactionsandthoughts.Criminalprofilerswilltakeevidencefromthecrimesceneand
attempttoconnectthatevidencetoamotiveorcharacteristicoftheperpetrator.Forexample,
dependingonhowwellplannedthecrimeseemscanprovideinsightintothemindofthe
criminal(OToole).Iftheperpetratorspentagoodamountoftimeplanningthatcouldsuggest
thatthecriminalhascommittedthatcrimeorasimilaronebefore.Otheraspectsofthecrime
suchaslevelofemotion,levelofcontrolandthevictimsrisklevelallaffecthowacriminal

.Thecrimelab
notonlyprovidestopofthelineforensicinformation,butalsoshowsaprimeexampleofhowfar
technologyhasadvancedintheshorttimetheFBIhasexisted.
Withinthedepartments,fewagentshavethechancetogoupinranks.Onestartsasa
specialagentstraightoutoftraining,andfromthereveryfewchancesforadvancementpresent
themselves.MostoftheworkforceoftheFBIconsistsofspecialagents,wheretheonly
advancementwouldinvolvechangingdepartmentsorbecominganexecutiveassistantdirector,

Thesepositionshavebecomeextremelylimitedandonlyopenuponceortwiceadecadeleaving
littleroomformostagentstoadvanceintoahigherupposition.Butthisdoesnotmeanno
changecanoccuronceanagentscareerstarts.Aspecialagentcanexpecttomovethroughmany
differentfieldofficesandmultipletaskforcesduringtheircareer.
TheFBIdefendstheUnitedStatesofAmericaonanationallevel.Sinceitscreationin
1908,theBureauhasfulfilledthisjob.Acareerasaspecialagentallowsonetospendtheirlife
helpingothersbytakingcriminalsoffthestreet.Thiscareeralsoprovidesanewchallengeevery
daybecauseasStateBureauofInvestigationchiefprobationofficerGregForrestsaidThisjob
iscrazyitnevergoeshowyouplanned.TheroadtobecominganagentoftheFBIrequiresalot
oftimeanddedication,butultimatelyrewardsthosethatqualify.Oncesomeonebecomesa
specialagenttheypossesthepowertoendmajorcriminalactivityallovertheUnitedStatesand
evenbeyonditsbordersinsomecases.AnagentoftheBureaualsohelpsguaranteejusticewhen
acrimetoosevereforlocalorstateofficialstohandlepresentsitself.TheFBIhasleftalasting
impactonAmericathroughlawenforcementreformandinnovation,scientificresearch,andthe
captureofmanyhighprioritycriminals,makingthisacareerthatfillsanyFBIspecialagentwith
pride.
