Leadership Action Plan

Introduction
There are variety of lessons that can be learned from a good leadership class. These
lessons will not only help you in a work environment but in everyday life as well. A person can
learn from observation and reflections and from their classmates. Another aspect that comes from
a good leadership class is the ability to implement what you have learned. This may include
putting into action the various theories or styles that were discussed in class. Also, it is crucial to
set goals and a plan on where you want to see yourself as a leader. In all, the things you learn
from leadership courses will stick with you throughout your career.

Observations
Throughout this course I was exposed to a variety of different leadership components that
ranged from exercises to challenges. I feel that it is important to reflect on the different
leadership styles that I felt would be useful. For example, servant leadership involves viewing
the leader as a servant. The servant through focusing on the primary needs of others and the
organization, then transforms himself or herself into a leader. (Komives, Lucas, & McMahon,
2013, p.69). Additionally, Transforming leadership is when the leaders and the followers raise
one another to a higher level of motivation according to (Komives et al., 2013, p.70). In relation
to the what Komives, 2013 said about leaders and followers brought up a very good discussion
that we had in class about the sigma behind calling someone a follower. After this in class
discussion, I was able to take a step back and think about what is really sounds like to classify
someone as a follower. I feel that it is important to classify followers as valued members of an
organization. One can do this by referring to them as team members, co-captains, or supporter.
Doing this I feel that it makes the group dynamics better.

When it comes to my role in this process I was more of a backseat observer in most
aspects. For example, when we were out on the challenge course I didnt always come up the the
ideas first but I was able to make suggestions and encourage other in my group. I feel that other
times when I am part of a group I am more outspoken and have stronger opinions. It all depends
on the atmosphere of the group I am part of. I feel that this works for some groups but could be
a challenge for groups that have a large amount people that wait till they have a good idea to
speak up. In all I learned that when I have an idea I need to speak up and let the group hear what
I have to say.

Personal Leadership Experience

Like previously stated, there are always areas of leadership that I could work on. One
area is the task of delegating. "The most successful leaders know that they do not have the time
or learning capacity to excel at every aspect. (Feloni, 2014). At times I feel that to be a good
leader I need to take on every task and allowing others to do something for me shows
weakness. However, this is not the case because it is important to include everyone. You

should want to limit tangents and other time wasters during meetings (Feloni, 2014). Reading
this statement above I was able to realize that I am extremely guilty on getting off task and being
easily distracted. The final thing that I understand I need to work on is working on the most
difficult classes first. I am the type of person that likes to do the easier tasks and then take on the
harder ones. After reading through the different leadership styles there are a few that I feel are
very important. These include not being a dictator like leader but allowing others to voice
opinions or ideas. With all these changes I have in store I believe that I am on the track to
becoming a very exquisite leader.

I have a lot of goals for my remaining year and school and were I see myself after
graduation. One goal I have is to earn an internship at a resort in either Florida, North or South
Carolina, or Georgia. I have always wanted to live in these states and what better way to do it. To
achieve these goals there are a few leadership checkpoints that I want to accomplish. First, I
would like to get as much practice in being a leader as possible. Luckily I was recently hired to
be a camp lead for Girls Scouts. I feel that this position will give me tons of experience leading
groups in a variety of ways. Second, I hope to attend the Resort and Commercial Recreation
Association conference in November 2015. This will give me insight on what internships are
available and even the opportunity to interview. I feel that if I attend this conference with a good
leadership background and a positive attitude good things will happen. Finally, being in the
Recreation Management program at Eastern will expose me to more learning opportunities and
chances to grow as a leader.
Conclusion
To conclude, going into a career field that involves any type of leadership role it is crucial
to understand that there a different ways to lead. A leader can take on a role that empowers others
or have the worry of having your team members feel unappreciated. Also as a leader you should
always be prepared to make improvements and learn new ways of going about a task. In relation
to learning new ideas, a leader should always be open to teammates ideas. Finally, it is necessary
to set goals and ideals of what you want your leadership to look like.
