Ellen MacArthur, not very surprisingly, considering the nature of her
achievements, insisted on writing the book herself, so, unlike many
sporting autobiographies, the words are her own and not a
ghostwriters. The style is unaffected and frank and perhaps all the
more powerful for being very personal. The challenge may be a
superhuman one, but the human being involved seems subject to the
same feelings as the rest of us, so much so that you wonder what the
motivation is, unless it is the challenge itself.
There is much use of the first person pronoun. Other features of style
include:
use of technical language (not overdone) giving a sense of the reality of
the situation a few examples
straightforward, direct language; active verbs (climbed 1), worked (2),
agonised (3), stream (4),
limited and precise use of adjectives and adverbs find some;
repetitively structured sentences often using a first person construction
find some examples
use of words/phrases/clauses that suggest struggle, effort or challenge
the hardest climb to date (2) there would be no second climb on this
one (20/21)

Use of the verb to get and words like thing, repetition of
words within a sentence for emphasis - add immediacy
to the writing, though there is some loss of refinement
Syntax begins to break down as the passage reaches its
climax; she even breaks into direct speech, as though
talking to herself not far now, kiddo, come on (48/49)
again adding to the sense of urgency and drama; it
makes the reader feel present
Occasionally more elaborate phrasing, including
comparisons, is used - as if I was stepping out on to the
moon (12/13); This is what it must look like to the
albatross (46); I felt like a million dollars (59) but most
of the writing is uncompromisingly literal I couldnt feel
my fingers (17)

Strong focus on words that convey detail of features and
equipment of the boat, including the height of the mast, the
weather, the waves again giving a strong sense of
actuality
Similarly direct language is used to detail her feelings
agonised (3), exhausted (35), rallied (47) and to convey
the physical and psychological effort required This was by
far the most dangerous part (54)
The strongest phrasing, reflected in the use of more
complex words, is often linked to moments of potential
danger, sometimes suggestive of near panic a world over
which I had no control (13); you are a passive observer
(15/16); the frustration was unreal (40); no time for
complacency now (55)
Humorous lightening of tone at the end with the reference to
Santa.
