Agricultural Inspector
To have a successful career you first have to see what you enjoy doing. For example, if
youre interested in commercial work you might be interested in construction. When you enjoy
your job, your work quality goes up and you perform your job well. Second you need to see what
job you do well. You might enjoy what you are doing but if youre not doing it right it is not the
right job for you. Be a dependable and hard worker. Your success will always depend on your
personality and character.
One career that interests me the most is an Agricultural Inspector. Agricultural Inspectors
inspect agricultural commodities, processing equipment, and facilities to enforce compliance
with government regulations. This interests me the most because here at school Im in the A.G
academy and they give us hands on experience on how these careers work. We take trips to Cal
Poly San Luis Obispo, which is one of the universities that is mostly A.G related. Also once a
year we have a trade show for our class. Each group gets an agricultural company and their
commodity. For instance, my group had the chance to pick between Dole Company and Fresh
Express, we chose Dole and the teacher gave us a commodity, which was iceberg lettuce.
Agricultural Inspectors task is to inspect facilities and their equipment for adequacy,
sanitation, and compliance with regulations. They also inspect horticulture products and
livestock to detect harmful diseases, infestation or growth rate. They can examine, weigh, and
measure commodities, such as poultry, eggs, meat, and seafood to certify wholesomeness, grade,
and weight. They examine livestock to determine effectiveness of medication and feeding
programs.
Knowledge elements are ranked by importance. First, Ag. Inspectors need to know about
food production, this is knowledge of techniques and equipment for planting, growing, and
harvesting food for consumption including crop rotation methods. Second, they need to have
some knowledge of the structure and content of the English language. They also need to know
about production and processing, this is Knowledge of inputs, outputs, raw materials, waste,
quality control, costs, and techniques for maximizing the manufacture and distribution of goods.

Agriculture inspectors also may check the quality of shipments before they leave or enter
the country at ports and border crossings. Day-to-day duties include the collection of samples
from animals, plants or products, the transportation of such samples to labs for testing, the
inspection of personnel working in contact with agricultural products, the writing of reports on
their findings at a particular site and the drafting of applicable health recommendations to
farmers, growers or authoritative bodies.
