Project

Introduction:

Ourgroupwasinspiredtotestwhetherornotlisteningtomusicaffectsthe

productivityinstudentsbecauseinourschoolwehavefoundthatsometeachersallowstudentstolistento
musicwhileotherteachersdont.Ifwecouldprovewhetherornotmusichelpstheproductivityof
studentsthentheoptionwouldbelessdebated.Asstudentswerealizedthatmanyofourpeersagreethat
musichelpsthemlearnandwork,butcouldbeconsidereddistractingandmaketheirperformancein
schoolworse,sowhynotdesignanexperimentthatcandecidewhetherornotthisistrue?Inorderto
designourexperimentwehadtodecidewhichtypesofmusicweshouldtestandhowwecouldtestthe
productivityofstudents.Wedecidedthatwewouldperform3differenttests,onewithoutmusic,one
whilestudentslistentoupbeat/hightempomusic,andanothertestwhilestudentslistentocalming/low
tempomusic.Thiswouldhelpusunderstandthatifmusicaffectsyourproductivity,whichkindofmusic?
Wealsodecidedthatinordertotestthestudentswewouldneedtodesignanexperimentthatcouldbe
repeated3timesandcouldeasilyshoweitherimprovementordecreaseinproductivityonstudents.Soas
agroupwedeterminedthatwewouldtimethestudentswhiletheycreatedorigamitulipsandmeasurethe
amountoftulipstheymadeeachdaywhiletheyeitherlistentomusicordont.

QuestionandHypothesis:
Doesmusicaffecttheproductivityofstudents?
Ifmusicaffectstheproductivityofstudentsthenupbeat/hightempomusicwillmakeanincrease
inproductivitybecausethemusicwillinspireandmakestudentsmotivatedtoperformthetasktheyare
given.

MethodsandMaterials:
1. Wefirstcreated2differentplaylists,oneplaylistwithupbeat/hightempomusicandonewith
lowtempo/calmingmusic.
2. Thenwecutlotsofpaperintosquaresthatcouldbeeasilyusedfororigami.
3. Wesearchedandorigamiprojectthatwaseasyenoughsoitcouldbememorizedeasilyand
wouldnttakemuchtimetocreate.
4. Wecollectedthematerialswewouldneedinordertotestthestudents,thesquarepaper,markers,
andastapler.
5. Thenwestartedourexperiment,wefirstexplainedandtaughtthestudentshowtocreatethe
origamitulips.
6. Thenwesetourtimerfor20minutesandtimedthestudentswhiletheymadeflowerswithout
listeningtomusic.
7. Oncethe20minuteswereoverwecreatedadatatableandinsertedtheamountofflowersthey
madewithinthe20minutesofthemnotlisteningtomusic.

8. Thenext2dayswerepeatedthestepsbuttestingthemwithupbeat/hightempomusicandthe
nextdaytestingthemwithlowtemp/calmingmusic.

Results:
Afterperformingourexperimentwehavefoundthatinallofthestudentswetested
theirproductivityrateincreasedwhiletheylistenedtomusicopposedtowhentheydidn'tlisten
tomusic.Allthestudentsalsoweremostproductivewhenlisteningtoupbeat/hightempomusic
ratherthanlowtempo/calmingmusic.Thisdataconcludesandprovesthatourhypothesiswas
correct.

Reflection:
Thislabishelpfulinmanywaysforrealworldscenarios,notjustmakingtulips.We
canusetheresultstochangetherulesoflisteningtomusicwhileworking.Someteachersmay
notallowstudenttolistentomusicwhileworkingbutthislabshowsitmaybehelpfulto
studentsproductivity.
