Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards

fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK
From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.
You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.
You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.
From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.
For example

Sourcing

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman, lighting engineer, researchers, editors and runners in
order to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and post-production equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.
Sourcing
Crew
Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England
http://www.creativeengland.co.uk/index.php/portfolio/locationproduction-support/
Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
Facility
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/
can be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and
sound engineer.
Materials
Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets
or studio Props departments
Transport
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London
http://www.tfl.gov.uk, National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk,
hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per
person.

Facility hire

Importance
It is essential to have finances ready before a production. The
finance is important for paying for equipment for the production
such as cameras, tripods, lighting and sound equipment. Finances
for costumes may also be necessary if the production is, for
example a period drama or a western, etc.
If certain crew members are unable to get to and fro the production
site, it may be necessary to have finances ready for transport.
Crew would also be needed such as a cameraman, soundman,
editor, engineer and researches.
If a hired facility is being used, finance is essential. These can cost a
lot of money, so finance needs to be considered correctly.

Time:

Deadlines

Availability of equipment
Availability of personnel (size
of team; roles)
Importance
It is important to organise the time which you will use to film, and
what days you are going to do it on. This is also Important to do
efficiently to keep track of deadlines and make sure it is done in
time before the deadline. It is also usually better to do early on, so
that if anything needs to be filmed again or redone, etc. there is
enough time before the time is up.

Time is also essential when it comes to equipment, because you'd

want to get the equipment as early on as possible whilst they're still
available. As well as equipment, you'd want to get hold of the
people you're using for your production as soon as possible as well
so that you book them in before they make any plans on that date.

Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production equipment
facility houses

Importance
It is essential to make sure that you have the right facilities for the
production such as a camera, additional lighting and sound (if
needed), etc. So that you can produce the best you can with the
facilities you have access to. It is also important to have all the
correct props and houses/ locations ready for when you are about to
go and film.

Materials:

Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script (upload an
example)
Interviews
Costumes

Importance
It is important to have original material (your own footage)
because it makes your production unique and stand out. It's also
important because if you would use someone else's material, it
would be plagiarism.
Archive material would be used because it would allow you to gain
more ideas about your own production, however, you cannot use
the ideas to a full extent as that would be plagiarism.
Photo-library materials could be used as a guide to own ideas but
would not be able to use the original photos, unless they are noncopyright.
Sound library materials would need to be non-copyright to be used,
otherwise it would go against plagiarism.
The internet is important to get a better knowledge of location and
equipment, but it's important that you dont just copy and paste.
Audio makes a huge difference in a film even if it is diegetic
background sound. It is therefore a really important aspect.
The audio would not be allowed to be taken from a copyrighted
source, as it would go against plagiarism, so would need to find a
non-copyright source to use.
A script could be used as an outline for ideas of your own film/
script, but not used to the full extent of the whole script.
Interviews is factual programme (documentary), but you will also
interview people to get information and it's a form of research.
Costumes are important because it helps to set the scene for
different genres of films. For example, if you would do a Period
Drama, you would need costumes that would fit that time period
that you were doing.

Locations:
Recces (Upload an example)

Limitations and risks:

Distance, access, cost,
weather
Importance
The location of a production is crucial that it is the right type of
location for the type of production you are producing. This is
important because, for example, if it was (meant to be) a Western
film but it was based in the modern town of New York, it wouldn't be
very Western, and it'd confuse the audience, etc.
It would be important that the location is near and able to get to
easily.
It would need to be low/no cost for the location as there would not
be money enough for a location cost. The weather wouldn't be too
much of a worry unless it is needed that it is sunny, for example.
Sourcing
A Location Recce can be read about on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recce_(filmmaking)
Codes of
Location permissions
practice and
Clearances
regulation:
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
It is important that no 'no-Access locations are used - if It is crucial
to use a specific location due to the environment it creates, etc. a
location permission is needed. This is because some places may be
dangerous to enter, such as a broken down house, which may have
broken ceilings that could fall down, etc. This also reflects on the
Health & Safety of the crew and people involved in the production.
Permission and Clearance is needed for 'no-Access locations, as it
would be risky/ dangerous to just enter a site without permission.
Health & Safety is important for any work place. This is important to
keep in mind the different dangers that are nearby for the crew to
be able to keep safe at all times and all the people on set.
