Orff Style: The Donkey (nursery rhyme)

Grade Level: 3rd Grade


Objective(s):
1. Students will be able to write stick notation for The Donkey.
2. Students will create body gestures/dance moves to coincide with the lyrics of the
song.
3. Students will choose unpitched percussion instruments to improvise on.
4. Students will practice ABA form and perform The Donkey singing, dancing, and on
instruments in ABA form.
Materials:
The Donkey
Triangle
Cowbell
Recorders
Maraccas
Hand bells
Stuffed animal Donkey (Eeyore)
Procedures:
1. Teacher will teach The Donkey to the class
a. Teacher models
b. Teacher breaks song into short phrases for call and response
c. Teacher breaks song into long phrases for call and response
d. Class and teacher sing full song together

2. Class will help teacher stick notate the song on the board (lyrics pre-written)
3. Teacher will divide the class into groups and assign two measure phrases for the
students to create a dance movement based on the lyrics. Teacher will make up a
move for the first two measures as an example. Students will share their moves with
the rest of the class and put them all together.
4. When song and movements are solid, teacher will break into Orff instrument circle.
a. Teacher will ask half of the class to be respectful and choose Orff instruments.
The other half of will use recorders. Halves will switch on the next
performance.

b. Teacher will explain the following instrumental pattern based on lyrics and
notation on board:
m. 1-2 gray/black instruments will play
m. 3-4 recorders will play on beat 4 of measure 4
m. 5-6 colored instruments will play
m. 6-8 recorders will play on beat 4 of measure 8
Students will improvise while the teacher sings or hums the melody softly.
**This step will be removed when students are comfortable with improvisation.
5. Teacher will ask students what they would call the first part of the performance if we
performed the singing and dance moves, then the instruments, and then the singing
and dance moves again. Looking for A. Together, we will form ABA in our
musical composition.
Assessment:
Teacher will ask individuals to name the stick notation for individual measures of The
Donkey. (individual assessment)
Teacher will observe for creativity and proper execution of dance moves. (individual
assessment)
Teacher will observe the class for following the correct sequence of events during the
Orff instrument circle. (group assessment)
Teacher will observe for understanding of improvisation and creativity in B section.
(individual assessment)
Teacher will listen and observe for proper execution of ABA form during the
performance. (group assessment)
