Press.
This book is centered around modern times and the division between church
and state and how the citizens feel about it. This book will allow me to touch
on modern day problems about the subject.
Through out the book the division of secular and religious citizens in
democratic states across the world and where they stand on church and
state separation. It brings up both stories into contention and why each
group wants or not religion to be involved in policy making. The ongoing
conflict of modern society around the world as some religious citizens follow
their beliefs to the core and thus the laws should be based on religion
mandates and why some citizens want a more general moral based policy
making.

Fundamental Freedom
by America's Founders. Beacon Press.
The book is centralized on the how the founding fathers established
separation of church and state from the beginning in the United States. The
book allows me to use the constitution itself in order to cement my
separation argument.
The author deeply concentrates on the founding fathers and their stance on
the supposed clear wall of separation. The book directly quotes specific lines
from the constitution in order to prove the existence of separation on the
document. It argues that through the separation of church and state you
allow religious liberty to prosper and strengthen democracy. It touches on
why the founding fathers want the state and church to be separate even
though both entities share similarities.
Dreisbach, D. (2002). Thomas Jefferson and the wall of separation between
church and state.
NYU press.
This book greatly covers the ideological mindset of a U.S president on his
support for separation of church and state in the country. The book will help
me establish an argument for separation of church and state based on a
former head of government personal stance.

The author explores the stance of President Jefferson on the separation of

church and state and his reasons for it. The book is based on statements
made by Jefferson during his presidency via letters or speeches. It also
heavily touches on the ideologies of Jefferson and why he supported or
practiced such ideas. A specific quote which the author relies upon quite
often is "the wall that separates church and state" putting high emphasis on
"the wall" a metaphor used by Jefferson to establish his belief of church and
state being separate.

This book discusses a general overview of the separation of church and state
concentrating on the U.S. The book will provide general research information
on my topic, which will help me create an analysis on it.
The author discusses both sides of whether the church and state should be
separate through various evidence. From quoting the bible and the
Constitution and many other numerous other texts Hamburger tries to find
middle ground between both sides. The book touches the state of mind of
Americans during the late 18th century as well as the current century and
Europeans. Through out the book both sidesof the issue are discussed on
how it was viewed through out different time periods. Multiple people from

the different era's are mentioned and quoted in order to show the general
mindsets of people.
Hogan, M. (2001). Separation of church and state?. Australian Review of
Public Affairs.
The article uses Australia and the United States as an example of the issue
that the separation of church and state has become in modern times. This
article will provide with modern examples and information to use in my
argument towards my support of the separation of church and state.
In this article from an Australian newspaper issues are discussed about the
church and state and its separation in Australia and the United States. Hogan
touches subjects of how both governments can either be bias or neutral
when it comes to policy and religious faith. The author uses real world events
in which the topic is touched such as: the U.S presidential elections and how
the president and vice-president candidates wanted to restore religious
beliefs into policy and how the Australian government gaved preference to
church based employment agencies over their own government agencies.

The book concentrates on how the United States has some fundamental
values pertaining to the separation of church and state and how it sends a

message. This book will help me establish the benefits of a separate church
and state in the country.
The author conveys on how the U.S constitution and the country itself were
based on the separation of church and state. It mentions of the colonial era
and the early beginnings of the English colonies on north america and how
they practiced religious freedom and not having a unitary religion for all
colonies and thus separating government and church. It also emphasizes the
message being sent to the entire world by separating church and state.
