There is often a futility (at least to date) of trying to turn a print-plus-digital

magazine brand into an economically viable digital-only entity.
Estimates of the current amount of magazines vary due to the way some citizens
in the U.S view magazines.
MagNet puts the number of magazines purchased at approximately 10,000,
noted Husni, director of the Magazine Innovation Center at the Meek School of
Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi.
So far after conducting a recent study, Husni, has not found a decrease in
magazines however he has found a decrease in the amount of magazines being
made.
Many high profile magazines such as Newsweek, have been converted to be all
digital.
While the industry is rightfully focused on addressing magazine retail sales
declines through innovation and collaboration with retailers and other supplychain partners, the larger context is that discretionary products of all kinds
experience sales declines when the economy forces many consumers to forgo
non-essential purchases as they struggle to meet basic living needs, he said.
However, both print and digital magazine sales are increasing due to Americans
being intrigued by the community around them.
As of January 2013, publishing consultant Thea Selby reported that there were
446 magazine apps available through the Nexus Google Play store, 744 in the
Amazon Kindle store, and 2,954 in the Apple iTunes store. But those apps are
competing for visibility, discovery and consumer dollars and time with at least
850,000 total apps of all kinds in the marketplace, he said.
It is not unusual for some magazines to go out of style and newer-trendier ones
take their place.
Since there is such a high amount of magazines published there is often a
magazine for everyone depending on the topic.
Magazines do have to change up what they publish in their issues so the viewers
never get bored and move on to other magazines.
When a magazine declares that its going digital-only, several death signs can
be counted on: staff reduction, leadership changes, blaming the advertisers,
blaming the economy, and blaming the changing habits of the audience, he
noted.

This article helped me to better understand the debate on magazines going digital or
sticking with a paperback copy.

News magazines have been among the hardest hit facing

magazine declines.
That trend continued in 2012 for the six publications analyzed by
the Pew Research Center, Time and Newsweek, as well as four
smaller niche publications The Economist, The Atlantic, The
Week and The New Yorker. Ad pages for the group fell by an
average of 10.4% in 2012, about 25% greater than the 8.2% slide
experienced by magazines over all.
Sales of single-issue copies plummeted 16% on average for the
six news titles, roughly two times the 8.2% decline in single-issue
sales that the magazine industry as a whole suffered.
Tina Brown, the former editor of Vanity Fair and the New Yorker
was brought in to help save Newsweek in 2010, then ended printing
magazines and started displaying them on the internet and through
their app.
But Times 2012 numbers demonstrate considerable difficulty as
well. Time was the only one of the six news magazines to see all
three audience measuresnewsstand sales, number of
subscriptions and total circulation decline in 2012. It also
registered a 12.2% drop in ad pages, not the worst of the six but
also far from the best.
In 2012, magazines were hoping to increase their sales digitally
due to the release of the tablet and new and improved technology
on smart phones, however companies didnt see as big of an
increase in sales as expected.
Even with the headlines of big events in 2012 such as the
presidential election and the Summer Olympics magazines still
suffered from double-digit declines in single-copy sales.

This article allowed me to see the beginning of tablets and devices and their impact on
magazines.

Most literary agents receive thousands of papers that must be looked over for

review and decided if they are published or not.

Publishers have long lines of books and only about a fraction of these will get

published.
There are 130 million books in print.
In 2008, there were 275,232 new titles and editions published in the U.S. alone.

Among this sea of new books, 47,541 were new fiction titles.
A literary agent may get 5,000 query letters a year. Only a fraction of these will
lead to the agent requesting the manuscript. If you think about it, an agent

reading one out of a hundred submissions must read 50 books every year.
According to Donald Maass, one of the top literary agents in New York, as many

as 50% of books fail in the marketplace.

If you have a good unique story and have a good development of ideas you can

eliminate 90% of the competition making a decrease of 50,000 to 5,000.

If you know how to structure a story (and don't use the too-simplistic Three Act
Structure system), reduce your competitors another 80% or 90%. Your book is

now competing against 1,000 or even 500.

If there are ten major genres, then your book is only going against a tenth of

what's left. Those 1,000 or 500 books have been reduced to 100 or 50.
Developing a fantastic premise is a key point in becoming published. You want to
make sure your article flows.

The article helps me get a better understanding of the chances of becoming published
by writing a book and will help me if I ever want to try and get my writings published.
